Why Southern Charm Fans Love Chleb Ravenell's Mom Debbie
Chleb Ravenell joined the cast of Southern Charm season 8, appearing with his girlfriend, Kathryn Dennis, who is a series regular, and fans are loving his mother, Debbie. Kathryn and Chleb began dating in July of 2020, and moved in together six months later. Chleb agreed to film the show in an effort to strengthen his relationship with Kathryn.
Kathryn first appeared on season 1, and began a tumultuous relationship with Thomas. Throughout Kathryn and Thomas’ difficult relationship, they had two children, Kensington “Kensie” Calhoun and St. Julien Rembert Ravenel. The two separated in 2016, after two years on camera, and countless ups and downs. Later on, Kathryn found Chleb, and got to know his mother, Debbie, too.
Southern Charm stars Chleb and Kathryn went Instagram official in October of 2020, and Chleb was first mentioned on the series during the season 7 reunion, when Kathryn was asked about her new boyfriend. Chleb talked to US Weekly about his experience filming the show, saying, “I was like, maybe this will bring us together because I’ve never been on a show before. And she’s telling me it’s gonna break us up. I was like, ‘Nah, nah, we’re gonna grow closer.’ But it broke us apart.” When Chleb needs guidance, he can always turn to his mother, who's a true Southern Charm fan favorite.
On the series premiere, Kathryn threw a 30th Great Katsby party, where drama definitely transpired. Chleb revealed that he had spoken to his co-star Venita Aspen, in an attempt to mend Kathryn and Venita’s relationship. This led Kathryn to call Chleb, “Not loyal” on the show. Chleb and Kathryn left her party early and continued to argue the next day, at the home that they shared. He left their house and called his mother Debbie for advice.
Through Chleb’s car's Bluetooth system, viewers could hear Chleb and Debbie discuss his relationship troubles with Kathryn. Chleb told his mom that he felt Kathryn was distancing him from his family. He said, “She tries to take my time from you, from my family. She always says no, I should come first. If I don’t have nothing to do, then you can hang out with them.” Even after this, Debbie empathized with Kathryn, saying, “She sees how you and me relate…she wants that kind of love- cause her mom died. That’s why she started becoming close to me… She just needs someone in her life.” Kathryn’s mother passed away in August of 2019, and she understandably needed support. Debbie revealed that she became close with Kathryn, and helped to care for her children multiple times a week.
After Chleb expressed that he didn’t know what else to do, his mother offered to call Kathryn, explaining that she could relate to her as a fellow single mother. Debbie ended the call just as sweet as she started it, saying, “Kisses! Smooches!” Kathryn has rubbed many cast members and viewers the wrong way, but Debbie’s kind perspective reminded fans (and Chleb) to give Kathryn kindness (and the benefit of the doubt) when judging her behavior.
Kathryn welcomed Chleb back into the home after five days apart, and Debbie's advice. Debbie encouraged Kathryn to let Chleb know how much she cared for him by providing a home-cooked meal, and talking through their issues. However, this discussion turned into a continuation of where their argument left off.
Kathryn accused Chleb of lacking empathy for her during her custody battle with Thomas Ravenel, and being emotionally unavailable. Chleb responded that he felt Kathryn didn’t care about his feelings, and that he has had difficulty stepping into the role of boyfriend to a mother of two. It seems that Kathryn’s custody situation, and her children, have put a strain on her and Chleb’s relationship. He voiced his concerns, saying, “I didn’t know what I was getting into before dating you. Like three months into our relationship, you threw the kids straight on me.”
Chleb and Kathryn’s break-up grabbed the attention of viewers, but fans were possibly more interested in mama Debbie. A Reddit thread started when user u/eegeddes posted, “Chleb is not so amazing...... But? Debbie??? She is a role model the entire cast NEEDS!” Fans were calling for Bravo to bring on Debbie as a guest bartender on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, and even to replace cast regular Patricia Altschul as the show's matriarch. Viewers appreciated a “voice of reason” who could provide a considerate perspective.
“This is a positive post!!!" User u/eegeddes continued, “About the most positive, genuine, compassionate person we've been given the privilege to hear speak (like 5 sentences) since the beginning of this debacle we all SEEM To somehow enjoy. I was just happy to hear someone speak with wisdom in Charleston!!!” Although Kathryn and Chleb have called it quits, fans are still hoping to see more of Chleb’s wise mom in future episodes. He has provided interviews revealing that he is no longer on speaking terms with Kathryn, but because of their history, he will always love her, even though he isn't with her.
Southern Charm airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on Bravo.
