Shonen Jump Resurrects a Controversial Genre With an Interesting Twist

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Make The Exorcist Fall in Love chapters 11 and 12!

A manga called Make The Exorcist Fall in Love available on Shonen Jump's spinoff online-only publication is resurrecting the controversial harem genre. It's been years since the weekly flagship manga anthology published a series, like High School DxD, that falls into this genre.

Published in Shonen Jump+ in Japan and MANGA Plus internationally, Make The Exorcist Fall In Love didn't start out as a normal harem, and it's likely that the latest instances of this particular genre will be fleeting. The harem genre of manga and anime usually center around a group of female characters who travel or live with a male protagonist while vying for his romantic attention. Sometimes these girls are introduced all at once or they trickle in throughout the story. As of now, Make The Exorcist Fall In Love falls into the latter category. The titular little priest starts living with a girl named Imuri Atsuki to protect her because he thinks she's being targeted by Satan, when in actuality Imuri is in league with the Devil. But then the dynamics of their one-on-one relation start to change, therein introducing the twist.

In chapter 11 by writer Aruma Arima and illustrator Masuku Fukayama, the little priest chooses two nun exorcists named Sisters Barbara and Leah to live with Imuri instead of him since he's been indoctrinated to fear sensual love and doesn't want to live alone with her. But the sisters decide that they will all live together on an interim basis. By the end of the trial period, it's agreed that Imuri will choose whom she would like to live with and protect her for good. Chapter 12 then introduces a sea monster demon named "Mama" Leviathan, who's been seeing all of the "fun" her demon counterparts have been having in previous chapters by attacking the little priest. By the end of the chapter, she decides that she wants to live with the priest as well.

Although it's possible that Make The Exorcist Fall In Love will become a stereotypical harem instead of just a romcom with action, it's equally as likely that this whole girls-living-with-one-boy situation will only be temporary. Unless things don't go as planned, Imuri will of course choose to live with the little priest over the two sisters. The major curveball, however, is the introduction of Mama Leviathan. She may be aligned with Satan, but she is more interested in having fun with the priest. She actually wants to live with him and will hide her identity to get her way, which adds to the harem dynamic of the manga. What's even more intriguing is that Imuri knows who Leviathan actually is but won't reveal her knowledge because that would betray her true intentions. It will only be a matter of time, however, before Leviathan's true intentions will become known to the little priest and the two sister exorcists.

Many other typical harem tropes have already been introduced to the main story of this MANGA Plus series. Imuri might not have completely fallen in love with the little priest herself, but she's already showing signs of jealousy over his relationship with the two sisters. There are times when Imuri thinks she knows what the little priest will do and then becomes shocked when the opposite happens. On top of this, Imuri just witnessed one of the sisters get emotional when talking about the little priest, making Imuri feel less connected with him as she thought. Make The Exorcist Fall In Love readers who enjoy the harem genre will undoubtedly have nothing but positive things to say about the next few chapters in Shonen Jump's MANGA Plus title.
