No Way Home's Box Office Smash Throws The Gauntlet To The Batman

The success of Spider-Man: No Way Home's box office raises expectations for how well The Batman should perform - if it can live up to the challenge. It wasn't until Sony and Marvel Studios latest collaboration arrived in theaters that Hollywood truly saw a movie perform better than even pre-pandemic titles. Spider-Man: No Way Home had the second-biggest opening weekend ever, became the first post-COVID release to earn more than $1 billion worldwide, and set multiple other records. All future blockbusters are now on notice, including The Batman.

COVID's impact on Hollywood has been considerable over the last nearly two years. Between massive delays, poor box office performances, and more streaming releases, many wondered if the movie theater business would ever really recover. It still might not be back to full strength, but Spider-Man: No Way Home ended 2021 by showing that massive box office performances are still possible. 2022 has a huge slate of highly-anticipated blockbusters that will now attempt to pull off a similar feat. However, Warner Bros. and DC Films are now in the position to deliver the first blockbuster that will have similarly high box office expectations.

Even before its own delays, The Batman was predicted to be one of the highest-grossing movies of whatever year it releases. While official box office tracking isn't yet available, the pandemic-skewed performances of various 2020 and 2021 releases theoretically would've lowered the bar for what executives, audiences, and many others would expect The Batman to make. That is now out the window thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Its performance proves major blockbusters - especially superhero movies - can still be billion-dollar earners at the box office. Since The Batman is the next big blockbuster hitting theaters on March 4, 2022, there will now be an expectation for the new DC movie to also shatter expectations and perform like a pre-pandemic event film.

The good news for The Batman (2022) is that anticipation for the movie is exceptionally high, so it should be well-positioned to follow Spider-Man: No Way Home's box office run and be another huge hit. Audiences have grown increasingly more excited for the movie with each trailer that drops. Director Matt Reeves has tapped into the Dark Knight's detective side for The Batman's story, which seems to have re-grounded the character in a new continuity. Robert Pattinson also seems to be a great choice to play a tormented Bruce Wayne. With some fresh takes on recognizable villains, beautiful visuals, and hard-hitting action, The Batman will be a smash hit if everything comes together as well as expected.

Spider-Man: No Way Home's performance also shouldn't intimidate The Batman too much because just as Spider-Man is Marvel's biggest character, Batman is the same for DC. He's arguably even more popular than Spider-Man in general pop culture. This popularity came through with Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, as The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises both made more than $1 billion in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Since it has been a decade since the last solo movie for Batman (as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice doesn't count due to its team-up nature), the 2022 film could arrive at the perfect time. As a result, The Batman should have what it takes to live up to the new blockbuster standards set by Spider-Man: No Way Home's box office.
