From his valiant heroes to his malicious villains and all the other eccentric characters in between, there is a lot for fans to choose from. Cage's fans over on Reddit passionately shared their opinions about which of his many characters stand out among the rest as the very best.

10 Benjamin Franklin Gates - National Treasure (2004)

Though Disney's National Treasure movies weren't critically acclaimed, they hold a special place in the hearts of many fans. Cage leads the adventure movies as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian who uncovers hidden secrets throughout American history.

Cage is able to bring his action hero chops to the role while also playing Gates as more of an intellectual and grounded hero. One user liked Cage's role as Gates enough to suggest they'd "love another one of those films."

9 Jack Campbell - The Family Man (2000)

With Christmas just passed, fans likely rewatched many holiday movie classics for the season. One underrated Christmas gem that some fans might have watched is Cage's The Family Man. He plays a rich executive who gets a glimpse at the life he almost had if he stayed with the love of his life.

Cage plays Jack Campbell as a self-centered elitist who has to cope with a blue-collar family life. It is a surprisingly sweet and funny movie that Redditor KicksButtson names as one of Cage's "most underrated films."

8 Yuri Orlov - Lord Of War (2005)

Another excellent movie from Cage's filmography that was overlooked by many people is Lord of War. Cage gives a complex and charismatic performance as the mysterious Yuri Orlov, an arms dealer who gradually rises in the illegal arms game while questioning his loss of morality.

Yuri is a character who keeps the audience at a distance, showing that he is a layered man who is also capable of some truly heartless things. Redditor DarkMatterM4 expressed their love of the character while naming it as "Cage's best performance."

7 Memphis Raines - Gone In Sixty Seconds (2000)

Amidst the underseen and compelling smaller projects Cage has been a part of, there are also plenty of fans who like the actor's bigger blockbusters. One such movie of this kind is Gone in Sixty Seconds and Redditor kappa23 named Cage's character of Memphis Raines as their favorite, saying "he's just a little tired and wired" in reference to a line from Raines.

This is another easy-to-love character from Cage as Raines is a cool car thief who uses his specific set of skills to steal a number of cars in one night in order to save his brother from a deadly gangster.

6 Terence McDonagh - Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans (2009)

Cage's range as an actor is quite versatile and sometimes it is a lot of fun to see him go as wild as he likes in a role. Terence McDonagh in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is the perfect character for Cage to really have fun with.

McDonagh is a drug-addicted police officer who engages in corrupt and eccentric behavior while investigating a murder case. Redditor jjjam determined that the main reason the character is so good is that director Werner Herzog "really let him go full Nic Cage."

5 Donald Kaufman - Adaptation (2002)

Cage took on the strange role of playing screenwriter Charlie Kaufman in a movie written by Charlie Kaufman. To make Adaptation an even trippier movie, it is about Charlie accidentally writing himself into his own script. But while Charlie is the main character, it is not the only role Cage plays.

He pulls double duty also playing Charlie's entirely fictional brother Donald Kaufman. Donald is a much more outgoing and happier person than his brother which makes him such a fun character. Redditor MarcusHalberstram88 also adds "RIP" in reference to the fact that the movie is dedicated to this fictional character.

4 H.I McDunnough - Raising Arizona (1987)

Though the Coen Brothers are known for some darker movies, Raising Arizona is certainly one of their funniest. Cage fits perfectly into the wacky world of this movie playing H.I. McDunnough who is like a real-life cartoon character.

H.I. is a well-meaning career criminal who cares deeply about his wife and their plans of having a family but also cannot seem to kick his habit of robbing places. When suggested as a contender for Cage's best character, Redditor Curleysound enthusiastically agreed with "This x1000."

3 Sailor Ripley - Wild At Heart (1990)

The combination of Cage and filmmaker David Lynch was sure to result in an exciting project and Wild at Heart did not disappoint in those expectations. Cage plays the wonderfully-named Sailor Ripley, an ex-con who goes on the run with his girlfriend Lula when her mother hires a killer to hunt down Sailor.

The wild and hilarious dark comedy makes full use of its outrageous premise and Cage gives a very funny performance. One user suggested Sailor reminded them of "Snake from The Simpsons" which only added to their love of the character.

2 Castor Troy – Face/Off (1997)

The wild premise of Face/Off has Cage and John Travolta switching faces in this action-packed showdown between two deadly enemies. For much of the movie, Cage is playing the more stoic hero of Sean Archer. But many point to his role as the villainous Castor Troy as the better character.

Castor is a terrorist whose only motivation seems to be causing chaos and destruction just for fun. Though Cage is only seen briefly in the role, he immediately makes Castor a memorable villain which Redditor _Invalid_Username__ praises as "Nicolas Cage trying to act like Nicolas Cage."

1 Cameron Poe - Con Air (1997)

Though Cage has played characters in just about every genre, it seems as though fans are particularly drawn to his action hero roles. Among these characters, Con Air's Cameron Poe may be the most iconic.

Poe is a man convicted of murder after killing a man in self-defense. Despite being dubbed a criminal, he is a good-hearted man who just wants to return to his family once his prison sentence is over. But when a gang of prisoners takes over his transport plane, Poe must become the hero. Redditor DavesWorldInfo expressed their love of the movie and the character with Poe's line, "I trust two men. One of them's me, the other's not you."
