Spider-Man Fans Will Never Let Him Forget His Most Humiliating Costume
Fans of Spider-Man have never allowed him to forget his most humiliating costume. The “bombastic Bag-Man” is practically a meme within Spider-Man lore.
Throughout his comic book history, Spider-Man has worn a wide range of costumes, with consistently innovative and interesting designs. From the Iron Spider costume to the Future Foundation suit and the famous black symbiote suit from Secret Wars, Peter Parker has had his fair share of cool suits. However, not all of them have hit the mark by giving the web slinger an impressive fresh look. There has been one alternate costume that was so bad that it has reappeared multiple times over the years, almost as a recurring gag.
When Reed Richards AKA Mr. Fantastic was analyzing Peter’s black symbiote suit, he was left without his Spider-Man costume. Requiring a suit, the Fantastic Four had a spare uniform lying around, which ended up having a note reading “kick me” on the back. Unfortunately, he still needed a mask and since he didn’t have many options, Peter opted for a paper bag to conceal his face. Offered to him by the Human Torch, Peter wore the costume and seemed to know it was ridiculous. Instead of subjecting his Spider-Man persona to the new look, he chose to don a new alter ego as he called himself “the bombastic Bag-Man.” The self-proclaimed Bag-Man first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #258 (1984), written by Tom DeFalco with art by Ron Frenz, Josef Rubinstein, and Bob Sharen.
Many years later during the Identity Crisis storyline, Peter had to return to his Bag-Man persona when left without his suit a second time. Since then, Bag-Man has also made appearances in comics, toys, and several video games, reminding Spider-Man fans of his most absurd compromise. Although it is a silly alternate look, the spare Fantastic Four suit and paper bag emphasize what Spider-Man is capable of, proving that he is more than his iconic skintight outfit. Since Peter has so many cool costumes in his closet, the return to basics reminded fans that they connect with him beyond the traditional suit, making his sense of humor a focus point.
Initially frustrated by Johnny Storm’s costume pitch, Peter eventually embraced the absurdity of the suit. At the time, it was a pretty big downgrade from his black symbiote suit to dressing like a rejected fifth member of the Fantastic Four. Now, the bombastic Bag-Man represents a lighthearted era, long before Spider-Man ever acquired wealth that would keep him from ever wearing a paper bag on his head again.
