Fortnite Impostors Mode Is Exactly What It Sounds Like
A new mode Impostors is coming to Fortnite, and it might sound familiar for anyone that's played Among Us. Fortnite has been on a roll lately with various community modes and features being placed in the spotlight. The game has been built from the ground up to be able to incorporate new additions at any time, which makes it difficult for other games to compete against. Although some have found a way to stand out.
After Among Us' surprise success in 2020, many developers and other companies attempted to cash in on the trend. A slew of knockoffs entered the market. Bootleg Among Us toys and other collectibles could be found in stores. Even other AAA titles attempted to jump on the bandwagon. Earlier this year, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War introduced its "Double Agent" mode, which functions similarly to Among Us – albeit in an FPS style.
Now Fortnite is taking a stab at the social deduction genre, as detailed on the official website. "Impostors Mode" features ten players per game: two Impostors and eight Agents. The Agents are tasked with protecting The Bridge while the Impostors must attempt to sabotage it. Players can instigate a "Discussion" to weed out Impostors or get legitimate Agents removed. The mode is available for play now.
Each role has its own unique abilities and requirements. Agents need to complete certain assignments. These can range from repairing the Battle Bus to delivering reports. They must also be wary of any eliminated teammates. Naturally, Impostors are responsible for these eliminations. Other abilities include disguising as Peely, disabling assignments, and even teleporting other players. Much like the gameplay of Among Us, Agents win when all Impostors are found or all assignments are completed. Conversely, Impostors claim victory after taking out the Agents. As one might expect, public voice chat is disabled. However, party chat, emoting, and Quick Chat will still be functional.
It's all very reminiscent of Among Us, even down to its language. Additionally, the use of the same terminology and overall tone of the announcement makes it clear that Fortnite is in on the joke. There isn't anything inherently wrong with imitation, either. It's the highest form of flattery – Innersloth may very well be impressed by the copying. The studio is also no stranger to referencing things in Among Us either. Impostors Mode does have its own unique ideas, too, such as teleporting players.
Still, some might find it "sus" that one of the most influential games in recent years has resorted to this level of pandering. Fortnite did essentially kick off the Battle Royale craze that other games have copied. Rumors of a Fortnite and Among Us crossover were also recently debunked, making this mode feel far too timely. But with some distinctive mechanics and in-lore justification, Impostors Mode could find its own niche. It may not overtake the main game modes in popularity, but players should keep their eyes on this alternative – and their teammates.
