Dune Part 2 Script Currently Being Written | Screen Rant
Denis Villeneuve is hard at work writing the script for Dune Part 2 now. In just a couple of months from now, Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's iconic sci-fi novel will arrive. Dune was once slated to premiere in December 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic pushed it back to this fall. This is far from the first time Dune has been adapted into live-action form before; the previous big screen effort was David Lynch's 1984 movie, while Syfy turned it into a miniseries in 2000. And yet, neither of those really managed to succeed in capturing the epic scope of Herbert's world.
Luckily, Villeneuve has a trick up his sleeve. When approaching Dune, the director knew he had to split it into two movies. Last year, Villeneuve explained this was because the world of Arrakis is far too complex to properly explain with just one installment. Dune Part 2 has yet to be officially greenlit by Warner Bros., but it's clear the studio already has big ambitions for the franchise. An HBO Max prequel series titled Dune: The Sisterhood is currently in development, and it wouldn't be surprising if more projects emerged later on.
Villeneuve spoke to Total Film recently for the magazine's latest issue and shared where he's at with Dune Part 2 (via GamesRadar). The movie itself is in the early stages, Villeneuve explained, as he's still in the process of writing the script. Already, though, it sounds like it is going very well because he's excited about it. Villeneuve said:
"I’m writing [Part Two] now, and I feel like I’m eight years old again. That’s very uncommon for me. It’s the first time I’ve experienced it where I’m watching one of my movies, and I have a moment of deep gratitude, of deep joy, and I say, 'Thank you, life, for having allowed me to bring that to the screen.' [laughs] I don’t know how other people will feel about it. But me? Denis Villeneuve when he was 14 years old? Thank you."
Those familiar with the book have been trying to guess where Dune Part 1 ends, though the trailers have been careful not to give away too many glaring details. Villeneuve recently revealed that, should it get made, Dune Part 2 will center on Zendaya's Chani, who plays a smaller role in the first movie. Part 1 instead focuses on Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as his family comes to power on the desert planet of Arrakis. Chalamet would return for the sequel, alongside other members of the cast. Dune also stars Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Davie Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, and Javier Bardem.
Though Dune is still a good several weeks away, the early buzz has been promising. Recent Oscar winner and director of Marvel's Eternals Chloé Zhao recently said she was blown away by Dune and Villeneuve's cinematic vision, and the stars of the movie have all spoken highly about what has been created. Though past adaptations of Dune have struggled to make an impression, it truly looks like Villeneuve has the perspective (and the budget) to make it special. Hopefully he'll get the chance to direct Dune Part 2 as well, especially since he's enjoying writing it so much.
