Downton Abbey 2's Title Explained: What A New Era Means
The Downton Abbey movie sequel has been subtitled A New Era and here's what that could mean for the Crawley family and their loyal servants downstairs. After Downton Abbey made a successful leap to the big screen in 2019, the sequel to the worldwide smash hit film is set to be released on March 18, 2022, after being pushed back from its initial December 2021 date. The Downton Abbey sequel will reunite the cast of the 2019 film and will guest star new characters played by Dominic West, Laura Haddock, Hugh Dancy, and Nathalie Baye.
Downton Abbey 2019 was set in 1927, a couple of years after the BBC and Masterpiece PBS series wrapped its sixth and final season in 2015. The plot of Downton Abbey 2019 involved Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and the Crawley family hosting a visit by King George V (Simon Jones) and Queen Mary (Geraldine James). The drama unfolded upstairs and downstairs as Downton Abbey's loyal servants clashed with the Royal Household. Meanwhile, Tom Branson (Allen Leech) prevented an assassination attempt on the visiting King George and he also fell in love with Lucy Smith (Tuppence Middleton), the secret daughter of Lady Maud Bagshaw (Imelda Staunton), the estranged cousin of Lady Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith). But while Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) considered whether she should sell her family's ancestral home, the Downton Abbey movie ended with the Crawleys and their servants united in celebration.
The story of Downton Abbey: A New Era is being kept under wraps but a few details have leaked out that hint at what the subtitle signifies. A small amount of footage of Downton Abbey: A New Era screened at CinemaCon revealing that this time, the Crawleys are planning a trip abroad, possibly to Europe. Carson (Jim Carter), Downton's former butler who took back control of the house in the 2019 Downton Abbey movie, even says, "The British are coming!" Lord and Lady Grantham generally only traveled as far as London during the series so an overseas excursion is a novel new story for the Crawleys (which befits the film's larger budget) and that, in itself, is "a new era" for the family.
However, Downton Abbey's creator Julian Fellowes has also hinted that an iconic character dies in the sequel, which, naturally, has Downton fans worried. Downton Abbey 2019 set up that Lady Violet is gravely ill and she passed the torch to the Crawleys' future matriarch, Lady Mary. It's a bit of a surprise that Maggie Smith is returning for Downton Abbey: A New Era but the film could depict Lady Violet passing at last. Otherwise, a different member of the Crawleys could die, which would be devastating, but also in keeping with Downton Abbey's tragic deaths of major characters like Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) and Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay).
Downton Abbey: A New Era's CinemaCon presentation also teased a wedding, which could mean the nuptials of Tom Branson and Lucy Smith. But Downton Abbey 2019 also strengthened the engagement of Daisy Mason (Sophie McShera) and Andy Parker (Michael C. Fox), Downton's assistant cook and footman. There could be as many as two weddings in Downton Abbey's sequel that could herald A New Era upstairs and downstairs.
Another possibility for Downton Abbey: A New Era is a time jump into the 1930s. The Great Depression happened in 1929 and it also devastated Great Britain, with unemployment doubling and the collapse of the demand for British products. Downton Abbey has changed before the movies, and with what it means for the Crawleys to preserve their lifestyle, a remnant of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, in the face of a rapidly evolving society. Downton Abbey: A New Era could begin a seismic shift for the Crawleys as they enter the 1930s and the inevitable changes the beloved family will have to adjust to, especially if more Downton Abbey movies will be made.
