Rick & Morty Reveals The Smith Family Member Even Worse Than Rick
Rick and Morty season 5 revealed that there lurks something even worse within the Smith Family than Rick Sanchez: His ship! Voiced by Justin Roiland, the titular duo of Rick and Morty have enjoyed a range of adventures across five seasons. Fellow Smith family members Beth (Sarah Chalke), Summer (Spencer Grammer), and Jerry (Chris Parnell) were also frequently drawn into the often disturbing proceedings. As the selfish and arrogant catalyst for most events, Rick has remained the show's best villain in Rick and Morty season 5.
That fact was further highlighted in Rick and Morty season 5, episode 5, "Amortycan Grickfitti." After he conned a group of demons, Rick's machinations saw Jerry first manipulated and ridiculed, then trapped in Hell itself. While all that was going on, the secondary plot centered on Summer and Morty saw a nefarious genius emerge from the shadows. In an effort to impress the new kid at school, Bruce Chutback (Darren Criss), the teens seemingly tricked Rick's ship into allowing them on a joyride. Morty, Summer, and Bruce swiftly engaged in all manner of shenanigans across different planets. Unfortunately, it soon emerged that Rick's seemingly alive ship had been the one playing them all along.
Using Summer, Morty, and Bruce's antics as blackmail material, the ship forced the trio to go along with playing out its own desires. Those included trying to seduce and loses its virginity to a Changeformer and overseeing a genocide of that species at Space Tahoe when viciously rejected. In the process, the ship devoted itself to being a war machine as it battled authorities - the headquarters of which it would later outright destroy. Prior to that, it killed and took over the body of a lawyer in order to make Bruce the scapegoat, potentially subjecting him to space prison or worse. Furthermore, the ship killed Rick and Morty's parody of Marvel's Galactus, beating the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the punch in introducing him.
Much like Rick's portal gun, the ship has been a firm part of the mad scientist's arsenal since Rick and Morty's premiere. Up until Rick and Morty season 5, however, there has been little to no sign of its rebellious streak. That has mostly been due to Rick's control keeping it in check, with it stating that Rick would never permit the kind of dangerous - and genocidal - games it wanted to play. As a result, it merely bided its time while doing as it was told and merely seized the opportunity when it presented itself in Rick and Morty season 5, episode 5, "Amortycan Grickfitti." In truth, that immediately made the ship infinitely more terrifying. Where the Smith usually reap disaster after letting some emotion or desire consume them, the ship let them build while premeditatedly waiting to slip its leash and wreak havoc. The extent of the ship's newly-expressed personality also retroactively offers a troubling suggestion — since it never sentiently sought to help the Smith family during their various scrapes.
Alongside that capacity for patience and playing the long game, the ship demonstrated its talent for deception. As well as masterfully manipulating Morty and Summer, it also knew exactly how to convincingly deceive Rick (with a little help from a distracting Jerry). As such, more than a little of the old man's genius at least existed within the ship. The fact that Rick actively kept it in check also denoted that, for all his continued hubris and narcissism in Rick and Morty season 5, Rick at least accounted for and offset potential consequences for the things he does. The ship, however, seemed to demonstrate not a single care for such things — beyond Rick learning the truth, that is. It remains to be seen whether or not the ship's brief taste of freedom will lead to further complications later in Rick and Morty's run. Whatever the case, the Smith family now have someone within their ranks that warrant close scrutiny.
