How Snapdragon 888 Will Improve Gaming On Android Phones

With an estimated 2.6 billion mobile gamers, and more to come, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 offers plenty of improvements for those who like to game on an Android smartphone. Many AAA games, such as Fortnite and Call of Duty: Mobile, have come to the mobile platform in recent years and the next-generation Snapdragon chip is intended to create an experience never before seen on Android devices.

Snapdragon 800 series processors power most flagship Android phones. Qualcomm also makes 600 and 700 series chips for lower-tier smartphones. This wide range of chips helps to ensure Android users get the optimal smartphone experience, no matter their budget. However, the new Snapdragon 888 is Qualcomm's best chip to date, and that also means some major advances in mobile gaming.

Within the Snapdragon 888 is the Adreno 660 GPU, a new powerful graphics processor. Qualcomm states that this GPU provides 35-percent faster graphics rendering at 20-percent more power efficiency, compared to Snapdragon 865. As a result, mobile gamers can expect advanced HDR features and framerates up to 144 fps. The Adreno 660 GPU also brings Variable Rate Shading (VRS) to Android phones; a feature previously only available on PCs and next-generation consoles that allows game developers to shade each frame with fewer pixels than before. According to Qualcomm, typical AAA games have 3.6 million pixels being shaded on the display and with the use of VRS, developers can specify where to shade, resulting in only 1.4 million pixels needing to be used. VRS is expected to result in 40-percent more efficiency by reducing GPU workloads and a 30-percent increase in gameplay performance, compared to previous Snapdragon chips.

Snapdragon 888 also features Qualcomm Game Quick Touch, which is designed to reduce touch latency. Mobile games require greater touch response due to gamers relying on their fingertips rather than gaming controllers or keyboards. Qualcomm Game Quick Touch is optimized for faster response times (at the millisecond level) to avoid a delayed frame. Qualcomm's lab tests show the feature helps decrease touch latency by up to 20-percent and will be automatically enabled for every mobile game.

Video games can be played on various platforms. However, each platform has its own style of play. Mobile gaming is still limited in performance compared to larger and more powerful units, such as PCs and consoles. Although the advantage of mobile gaming is that most people have access to a smartphone. As a result, many game developers are focusing on creating mobile games in a bid to attract the masses. Due to its reach, mobile gaming has a bright future and Qualcomm continues to improve the mobile gaming experience with solutions like the Snapdragon 888 SoC.
