Donnie Darko Honest Trailer Makes Fun Of Obnoxious Fanboys
The latest Honest Trailer from Screen Junkies takes on a 21st Century sci-fi classic: Donnie Darko. The directorial debut by Richard Kelly about a troubled teenage boy having apocalyptic visions released in 2001, and while it found little initial success at the box office, strong critical reception helped it quickly build a cult following. Featuring performances by then up-and-coming actors Jake Gyllenhaal, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, and Seth Rogen, plus stars Drew Barrymore and Patrick Swayze, the movie's cast is worth the price of admission alone. The ambiguous plot gives it plenty of re-watch value, keeping its fandom alive almost two decades since it first hit theaters.
The Screen Junkies team seems to like Donnie Darko, too, because they spend a lot of their time criticizing its fanbase for being just a tad obnoxious. While they mention how much the movie loves its title and mock the way it approaches its 1980s-setting, the real butts of the joke are Rogen and Kelly. Fans of this movie that haven't seen the director's other work are in for quite a surprise. You can watch the video below:
The writers get a lot of mileage out of Jake Gyllenhaal's gloomy expression and manage to include several jabs at other content, like Stranger Things, Cuties, and Kelly's follow-up Southland Tales. They only briefly allude to the 2004 Director's Cut, which interestingly followed the opposite trend of the original and became less well-regarded with time. The comments about the plot being every teenage boy's fantasy come true are spot on, and Frank is absolutely "Bugs Bunny on ketamine," but the best joke of the video is when they use Donnie's rant about The Smurfs to poke fun at their own comments sections. The blunt recapping of the sci-fi elements is unlikely to make viewers want to check out Donnie Darko if they haven't seen it. Still, those already familiar will likely find themselves with the urge to queue it up again tonight.
