Dead Space Dev’s The Callisto Protocol Is Set In The World Of PUBG
Upcoming sci-fi horror The Callisto Protocol has been confirmed to take place in the same universe as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. The horror game was revealed at The Game Awards last night. It's being made by Glen Schofield, known for his work on Dead Space; work which is clearly being put to good use in this remarkably similar title.
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds traditionally isn't known for sci-fi horror. It's a battle royale, one of the first games to make waves in the genre, and it is by no means a sci-fi game. The title sees 100 players dropped in an expansive, modern-day map, and calls for them to scrounge up weapons and gear and take each other out, with the goal of being the last person standing at the end. When it launched back in 2017 it barely had any lore at all, let alone enough lore to support a sci-fi horror game. In recent months, though, the story has been picking up significantly, thanks to various in-lore documentaries narrated by Star Trek actor Jonathan Frakes. The game even launched a dedicated lore website recently to keep fans up to date on the new story.
Striking Distance has been working on a narrative experience connected to PUBG for some time now, but there can't have been many fans that expected something like this. The brief cinematic trailer that played at the Game Awards has little if anything to do with the explosive battle royale, showing instead a dark, dreadful sci-fi dungeon populated by malfunctioning robots and horrible fleshy monsters. However, a Striking Distance spokesperson has confirmed to IGN that The Callisto Protocol is in fact the narrative PUBG experience fans have been expecting, even though the spokesperson wouldn't elaborate on how exactly the new game is connected to the battle royale.
It remains to be seen how the two games will connect. PUBG's newfound lore has certainly been taking a definite turn for the weird; the video for the new Paramo map indicates a bizarre backstory involving occult secrets and the Fountain of Youth itself. The developers are clearly dipping their toes into the realm of the weird, but based on what little fans have seen of The Callisto Protocol, this looks more like a jump into the deep end.
Regardless of how it ends up connecting to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, The Callisto Protocol should be a very intriguing title for horror fans. Glen Schofield has already proven how ably he can handle the sci-fi horror genre, and bringing Dead Space-caliber spooks to next generation hardware should make for a very terrifying time. Space horror and PUBG are certainly two unlikely things to crossover like this, but The Callisto Protocol is shaping up to be a very engaging intersection.
