McQuarrie On “Jack Reacher” & R-Rated Cruise
Before the two most recent “Mission: Impossible” films, director Christopher McQuarrie and actor Tom Cruise have had a long working relationship on several projects from “Valkyrie” to “Edge of Tomorrow” on which McQuarrie worked on those film’s scripts.
But it was 2012’s first and still underrated “Jack Reacher” film where we saw the first embers of the exciting combination of what Cruise starring and McQuarrie helming could yield. McQuarrie recently spoke with Empire reflecting on the project and says he would have potentially taken the series into R-rated territory had it continued:
“Tom and I were talking about, had the series continued, to take Reacher to a place where, in the post-Deadpool, post-Joker world, Reacher could have been an R-rated movie and an R-rated franchise and really fed into the brutality of those books. We were fully ready to lean into that.
One of the big draws of that first film is that Cruise plays a character quite different to his usual one – the movie also indulging in some dark comedy from the incompetent bathroom brawl to Cruise’s deliberately antagonistic bar room zingers.
Sadly McQuarrie wasn’t involved in the sequel which was handed over to Ed Zwick who made a much more neutered and far blander affair which lacked the something that made the first so good. It hasn’t stopped McQuarrie though who has teased that he and Cruise currently have more projects in the pipeline that could see the actor turn towards more R-rated fare:
It’s a very un-Tom character, and we have plans for an even more un-Tom character that we’ve been talking about, which I’m hopeful about in the future. The franchise has moved on, and we haven’t. So we’ve now got stuff in the hopper. The [Jack Reacher] stuff we’re talking about now is tinker toys [compared to it], I’m actually very, very excited.”
The pair are currently busy prepping for two more “Mission Impossible” films, while Cruise has both a actual space-shot film and a long-gestating “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel titled “Live Die Repeat and Repeat” on the way.
The two ‘Mission’ films are aiming to start shooting again by September and will run through to May 2021.
