NBC Pulls Famed “Community,” “Office” Eps

NBC has pulled blackface scenes or episodes from more of its popular comedies made in the past decade or two. First up, a scene from the 2012 episode “Dwight Christmas” of “The Office,” one in which a character appears in blackface, has been edited out.

Show’s creator Greg Daniels issued a statement saying: “Today we cut a shot of an actor wearing blackface that was used to criticize a specific racist European practice. Blackface is unacceptable and making the point so graphically is hurtful and wrong. I am sorry for the pain that caused.”

The scene will no longer appear on Netflix or in syndication – it also will not be on Peacock when “The Office” moves there in 2021.

The other is more drastic as Netflix has pulled the entire episode “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons” from the second season of “Community”. In the episode, often considered one of the show’s best in polls, Ken Jeong’s character wears dark make-up to play a “dark elf.”

“Community” actress Alison Brie says she regrets voicing Vietnamese American character Diane Nguyen in Netflix’s “BoJack Horseman”. She issued a statement on Instagram today saying: “We missed a great opportunity to represent the Vietnamese American community accurately and respectfully, and for that I am truly sorry. I applaud all those who stepped away from their voiceover roles in recent days. I have learned a lot from them.”

Society’s questionable depictions of race in popular media, and the push remove white supremacist symbols and names, continues around the globe. The Democratic Party of Orange County passed an emergency resolution this week calling on the Orange County Board of Supervisors to change the name of John Wayne Airport to Orange County Airport.
