DS9 Wasn't Supposed To Have A Ship But It Got 3 Defiants

Even though Star Trek: Deep Space Nine originally didn't have its own starship, three versions of the USS Defiant ultimately appeared throughout the series. Deep Space Nine was set on the eponymous space station, but it didn't take long for the creative team to realize that the show's three Runabouts were insufficient. This was especially the case after the Dominion was introduced as the villains of the saga. DS9's Runabouts were not only limited in terms of storytelling, but they would be no match for the Founders' military arm, the Jem'Hadar.
