Who Was GoT's Three-Eyed Raven? Targaryen Theory Explained

Game of Thrones never actually revealed the identity of the Three-Eyed Raven, but one working theory is that a Targaryen held the title before Bran Stark. The HBO series Games of Thrones adapted George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels while sticking pretty closely to the source material for the first few seasons, then going on its own once it surpassed the released books’ timeline. In doing so, certain plotlines like another secret surviving Targaryen (other than Jon) and details on characters’ backgrounds were unfortunately left out. Bran’s Three-Eyed Raven predecessor was the last greenseer human living beyond the Wall with the Children of the Forest. Portrayed by Max von Sydow in season 6, the Three-Eyed Raven guides Bran — who possesses greensight — to the cave where his human body lives before teaching him the wisdom that comes with his gift. The Three-Eyed Raven reveals he has lived for over a thousand years, though has had many predecessors who also passed down the magic of greensight. In his training, Bran sees all timelines and everything that happens at once, including the history behind the White Walkers, Lyanna’s marriage to Rhaegar, and how Wylis became Hodor.
