Teen Wolf Creator Addresses How Movie Handles Dylan O’Brien’s Absence

Teen Wolf series creator Jeff Davis addresses how the upcoming movie will handle the absence of Dylan O’Brien's Stiles. In November 2021, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the show's finale, it was announced that a Teen Wolf movie was in the works. Slated to arrive on the Paramount+ streaming service later this year, the movie’s summary teases that a terrifying new evil has emerged in the town of Beacon Hills. Tyler Posey will be back in the role of Scott McCall to reunite with his friends and battle against the most powerful enemy they’ve ever faced. A recent Teen Wolf trailer offered an exciting preview, revealing that Crystal Reed looks to be back in the role of Allison Argent.
Posey and Reed aren’t the only ones that will be reprising their roles from the popular MTV series. Tyler Hoechlin, Holland Roden, and Colton Haynes are among the show’s original stars that will be making an appearance in the upcoming Paramount+ movie. One notable Teen Wolf alum missing from that list, however, is Dylan O’Brien. The actor, who garnered widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Stiles Stilinski, explained that it was a difficult decision to not return for the Teen Wolf movie. Ultimately, he said that he was happy with where he left his character.
In an interview with Collider at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, O’Brien’s absence was discussed. Davis, who will be returning to write the Teen Wolf movie, said that Stiles’ presence will be felt and noted that the beloved sleuth wouldn’t be ignored. He promised that Stiles will come up in more than one situation, specifically in regard to his relationship with Lydia (Roden). The quote has been transcribed below.
“Yeah, well, what we do is–we don’t ignore it, but we reference it. And I think we can’t do the movie without paying tribute to the character Stiles. So he comes up in more than one situation. And there’s a big storyline with Lydia actually, that the fans can look forward to that has to do with their relationship. So I’m not gonna say any more than that.”

Although Davis is keeping specifics to himself for the time being, it’s only fitting that the lack of Stiles would impact Lydia given their history. But, even more than that, it would be impactful to Scott. Even as the supernatural drama experienced significant changes over the course of six seasons, garnering criticism from fans for some of its story choices, the relationship between Stiles and Scott remained a solid foundation for viewers to rely on. This is especially true of the later Teen Wolf episodes, as the brotherly best friends relied on each other to an increasing degree.
It would be strange for Davis to ignore all of that. Thankfully, based on his comments, it sounds like Davis intends for the movie to celebrate Stiles’ contribution to the franchise even if he won’t be there in person. And as the Teen Wolf universe expands with the off-shoot Wolf Pack, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, maybe O’Brien will someday make a reappearance.
