Justice League's Version of 'Avengers Assemble' Is Truly Embarrassing
The Avengers have one of the greatest team catchphrases in comics; however, when the Justice League tried their own version of "Avengers Assemble," it ended up making for an embarrassing yet hilarious moment. In the iconic JLA/Avengers crossover, the two superteams banded together with Marvel's heroic rallying cry leading the DC Comics heroes to try their own. But, unfortunately, the "Justice League... Lambaste" catchphrase" didn't have the same effectiveness as their otherworld heroes.
Catchphrases are one of the most fun aspects of superheroes, as both DC, Marvel, and other universe's characters have some great lines to get ready for battle or make their presence known. From Batman's "I'm Batman," Hulk's "Hulk Smash," to Superman's "truth, justice, and a better tomorrow," there are several iconic lines that heroes and villains have used time and time again. One of the most popular catchphrases is the Avengers "Avengers Assemble," which is used to call together Earth's Mightiest Heroes. However, when the Justice League tried to mimic the catchphrase, they ended up with a hilarious and embarrassing version of the slogan.
In Avengers/JLA #4 by Kurt Busiek, George Perez, Tom Smith, and Comicraft from Marvel and DC Comics, the Avengers and Justice League begin their final stand against the universe-destroying villain Krona. The heroes band together and attack, as they call out "Avengers Assemble." In the moment, the Justice League also attempt to get their own catchphrase that matches the epic rallying cry, as Superman tells calls out, "Justice League. Uh- lambaste." The embarrassing catchphrase doesn't have the same effectiveness as the Avengers' line as Superman immediately recognizes that it could use some work.
It's a funny scene that, while embarrassing for Superman, is intentionally played up for humor, as its shows that the Justice League don't have their own epic "Avengers Assemble"-like catchphrase. Justice League "lambaste" illustrates that trying to make an iconic catchphrase on the fly on the same level as the Avengers isn't as easy as it might seem. The lack of alliteration and trying to rival the unforgettable slogan on the fly doesn't help things.
The JLA/Avengers four-issue comic was an epic crossover that Busiek, Perez, and co. really made into something special. The interactions between the Avengers and Justice League were everything comic readers who longed for the DC and Marvel Universe to collide could ever want. While the Justice League couldn't come up with a catchphrase that was as epic as the "Avengers Assemble" line, Superman telling his team to embarrassingly "lambaste" remains one of the most hilarious moments from the series.
