Jedi: Survivor's Biggest Problem Is Star Wars Saturation
The highly anticipated Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be arriving on store shelves next year, but thanks to the seemingly never-ending cycle of Star Wars media - particularly in the time period in between Episode III and Episode IV - there is a worry that the game could struggle from saturation. Despite the successes and high viewing figures of shows such as Star Wars Rebels and Obi-Wan Kenobi, there is a growing feeling that different eras of the Star Wars universe - such as the High Republic, seen in Star Wars Eclipse - should be explored, with much of the current media focusing on the dark times between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. While this era of the canon timeline is exciting and features many of the series' favorite characters interacting, there is a growing sense of saturation given how many recent stories occupy that space on the timeline, with Andor set to add to the list later in 2022.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the sequel to 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which received critical acclaim for its fluid take on lightsaber gameplay and emotional canon story. Jedi: Survivor is set in 9 BBY - five years after Fallen Order - and will continue with protagonist Cal Kestis evading Inquisitors and the Empire while he struggles with the guilt of being one of the last remaining surviving Jedi. As with the first game, Jedi: Survivor will introduce new characters to the Star Wars mythos, including the shadowy Imperial senator spotlighted in the first trailer.
However, although Respawn told a compelling story arc with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, several years have passed and the game's setting and premise are now less unique. The recently finished Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of many pieces of media to focus on Star Wars' surviving prequel Jedi in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, with the list of Jedi who escaped Order 66 growing each year - Cal Kestis being one of them. The iconography of the pre-Episode IV era is now also more familiar to Star Wars fans, who have gotten used to Inquisitors showing up in animation, video games, and now live-action in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Andor is also set to spotlight this era, and while there's little Star Wars Jedi: Survivor can do about the glut of content that shares its setting, it is in danger of making the sequel feel less like a unique part of the galaxy far, far away.
Even with the saturation that Jedi: Survivor faces with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars Rebels (which ran for 75 episodes), and plenty of other comics and media that took place in this period, it should also be noted that the upcoming Andor will also be set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Thankfully for the sake of variation, Andor will not focus on a Jedi but rather on the formation of the Rebel Alliance through the eyes of Cassian Andor, set five years before his adventures in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. With so much of the Star Wars universe under-appreciated and under-used in the media (such as the events before the prequel trilogy), it is a shame there is a bloated focus on a period that could very much become - if it has not already - saturated by the end of next year.
Despite understandable excitement around the upcoming release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, with fans optimistic to see what the next step in Cal Kestis's journey will be, there is a serious worry that the recent catalog of media will saturate the world. The game will have to create an understandable, original story that can give Cal's adventures life and not make him feel like a background piece in the major stories seen in the television shows - which could be achieved by not bringing characters like Darth Vader back. Whatever the future holds for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, considering a move away from the period between the prequels and the original trilogy could keep the stories fresh and avoid the risk of saturation and repetition.
