I Don't Want DLC For Cyberpunk 2077's Best Character
Jackie Welles is Cyberpunk 2077’s best character, but CD Projekt Red should avoid making a DLC about him. With a rocky release in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 disappointed many players by over-promising features and building unprecedented hype for the futuristic role-playing game. In addition to bugs and glitches, the game was near unplayable on previous gen consoles, and Sony pulled it from the PlayStation store. Since then, CD Projekt Red has been patching and updating Cyberpunk to restore its image as a game company. While many may have forgotten about Cyberpunk 2077 two years on, CD Projekt Red shows they are still determined to prove the sci-fi game is worth playing by announcing DLC for 2023.
While the DLC to Cyberpunk 2077 could focus on several characters, it is likely to be Jackie Welles due to his death at the beginning of the game. Although he dies early on, his death significantly impacts the world and the characters around him. The player (V) becomes best friends with Jackie during the game's opening moments. Jackie offers V to stay with him until they both have enough money. Next, Cyberpunk 2077 will play a prologue montage of the two living in Night City: clubbing, merc work, spending money, and getting in lots of trouble. If a DLC was to focus on any underdeveloped plot moment, it might be this one. Unfortunately, this relationship ends when Jackie and V undertake a heist mission, and Jackie is fatally wounded.
While a Jackie DLC seems like a perfect way to improve Cyberpunk 2077’s image, it may highlight the original problems with the base game. For players, Jackie is a kind guide to the dangerous Night City, and he makes the long prologue missions much more enjoyable. Furthermore, Jackie's death brings much grief to Misty, Mama Welles, and many other characters. His loss genuinely comes as a surprise and shock. CD Projekt Red’s decision to kill him off so soon in the story means that a Jackie DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 will not be able to integrate into the base game. More likely, the DLC might be segregated content or a story that takes place in the past.
To have Cyberpunk 2077 DLC that takes place in the past can work well. The Last of Us 1’s Left Behind DLC takes players several years back to explore a character’s relationship in depth. Yet, it is hard to imagine this working in Cyberpunk 2077 due to its genre as a role-playing game. Any DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 will have narrative choices that change the ending of the DLC. If the DLC is a prequel, then any choices made by the player will become insignificant in the base game. As much as it is exciting to hear there might be a Jackie Welles DLC, CD Projekt Red will have to figure out how to integrate Jackie outside of the main story.
Another problem with a Cyberpunk 2077 DLC focused on Jackie is that even when completed, Jackie will still die at the beginning of the main game. There won’t be any options that can save him. This may make his sudden death even more bitter for players. As much as a Jackie DLC could be good, it might be better to see what other DLCs CD Projekt Red can offer. Cyberpunk 2077 had a lot of promises, one of those promises was Jackie, a best friend who would accompany V throughout thick or thin, but unfortunately, not even DLC will be able to really save him.
