Kaley Cuoco Shares Emotional BTS Big Bang Theory Story
Kaley Cuoco shares an emotional behind-the-scenes story from her time working on The Big Bang Theory. The actress played Penny for all 12 seasons of the hit sitcom. In fact, it's her arrival in Pasadena that kicks off the events of the series as she befriends her new neighbords, Leonard and Sheldon.
While Cuoco was part of The Big Bang Theory since season 1, she almost didn't star in it. The original pitch for the sitcom was quite different and CBS asked it to be reworked. Sheldon and Leonard were the only characters from the original concept that made it to the revamped version, and since it was an ensemble project, more actors were brought in, including Cuoco. Throughout The Big Bang Theory's 12-season run, Penny arguably had the best personal evolution. At the start of the series, she was lost as an aspiring actress and by the time it wrapped, she was successful in her new career path in the pharmaceutical industry and is happy with her marriage.
Being part of The Big Bang Theory for more than a decade was a privilege for Cuoco, and she's thankful for it. Aside from the experience, it also demonstrated how supportive her dad has been of her, as she revealed in an interview on The Late Late Show With James Corden that her father attended all live tapings for the show. And even if it has been 3 years since it ended, he still missed it. Read her full story below:
"We had a live studio audience, obviously, and he had a director's chair with his name on it. It sat at the top of the audience and he never sat in it, he always stood. Every night for curtain and bows and for intros — it's going to make me cry — he would be at the top and he would give me a thumbs up. All the crew and cast knew my dad so well, it was a thing — when we would come out, they would all give my dad a thumbs up. The whole audience ended up doing it, it was a weekly thing! It was just very special for all of us. My dad still misses our live tapings at Big Bang. I couldn't do a show without him at that point! It had been years! So I kept thinking, 'You can't miss one now, you're part of the show!'"
It's impressive that Cuoco's dad could make the time to attend all of The Big Bang Theory's live filmings for 12 years. That said, it's curious if he was also there in the few episodes that his daughter missed. The actress actually skipped two episodes during The Big Bang Theory season 4 after she got into a horse-riding accident that broke her leg. The series didn't make a big deal out of her absence and considering the fact that the show has six more primary characters, they were able to get away with it. When Penny returned a couple of outings later, she needed to wear a cast, so CBS gave her a new role to work around this — a bartender at The Cheesecake Factory.
Aside from this particular instance, it's also curious what Cuoco's father's thoughts were on Penny being sexualized in the early seasons of The Big Bang Theory. When the sitcom debuted, she was constantly objectified and even mocked for comedic purposes. Cuoco has acknowledged this since the sitcom wrapped up, so it may be something that they have always had issues with. Thankfully, as the series progressed, Cuoco established herself as a three-dimensional character and CBS dialed back on sexualizing her.
