Wolverine vs Hulk Reveals How Their First Fight Changed Logan's Costume

After Wolverine faced off with Hulk for the first time in Logan's very first appearance, the fan-favorite X-Man's costume changed significantly in his following appearance. Well now one of Wolverine's co-creators has returned to address the reason for this change.

Although they are two completely different types of characters, Wolverine and Hulk have had a longstanding feud and series of battles throughout Marvel's history. Of course, Wolverine has his own foes similar in style to himself such as Sabretooth and Lady Deathstrike. Meanwhile, the Hulk has enemies centered around his gamma theme like the Leader and the Abomination. But since Wolverine made his first appearance in comics by fighting the Hulk, the two are inextricably linked to battle it out from time to time, and it is always a good showing.

Their first fight in The Incredible Hulk #181 by Len Wein and Herb Trimpe concludes with Wolverine knocked out, but the Hulk and Wolverine are seen standing next to each other at the start of issue #182. The gap between these issues has never been explained, so Wolverine co-creator Roy Thomas is returning alongside artist Dave Wachter to tell the story in X-Men Legends #1. According to an interview with AIPT, Roy Thomas is also using this as an opportunity to explain how Wolverine showed up with a different costume in his next appearance in the landmark Giant Sized X-Men #1, which completely changed the legendary team’s original roster.

In the interview Roy Thomas gives a behind-the-scenes hint as to how the costume changed in production. Thomas mentions that, “[cover artist] Gil Kane drew the wrong mask on the cover to Giant-Size X-Men.” As it turns out though, the interior art wasn’t finished. So, “[interior artist] Dave Cockrum changed the mask because he liked what Gil had done. He changed it from the original mask to this other version and it wasn’t like it was an important change.”

The interesting part about this is that, like many superheroes, Wolverine has had an assortment of different costumes over the years. Sometimes these suits are explained for different reasons. Either they are a result of the hero joining a new organization, or working at a different city, or needing a tech upgrade. But other times there's no explanation at all, and fans just go along with it. But for Wolverine, because this was so early in his career, the change deserved some reasoning. The funny thing behind this change, however, is that the story is coming secondary, when in reality it happened simply because of the artist wanting to do something different. Either way though, Wolverine was bound for greatness regardless of what he was wearing during his first fight with the HulkX-Men Legends #1 will go on sale August 10.
