Gears of War Collection Rumored To Release This Year

A Gears of War collection is rumored to be releasing this year, following in the footsteps of other Xbox remasters like the popular Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Microsoft Game Studios’ third-person shooter hasn’t seen a new iteration since the 2019 launch of Gears of War 5. While Gears of War 6 is rumored to be inbound after The Coalition released an Unreal Engine 5 Demo, there has been no official confirmation as to when the next franchise installment will drop. That said, Xbox’s proven success with Halo: The Master Chief collection might have inspired the development of a remastered collection for Xbox’s other first-party IPs.

Rumors initially emerged in January that Microsoft allegedly has another remastered collection in development. The project involved a different Microsoft IP that would receive a similar treatment to Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Microsoft has kept its lips sealed on the matter, and has not confirmed nor denied the existence of such a collection since. The rumors continued to swirl nonetheless, claiming the Mystery IP would have all of its installments compiled into a single package, with enhanced visuals and other improvements. Though at the time it was just conjecture, the rumors claimed either remasters of Gears of War, Fable, or Forza would be the obvious guesses. However, it seems more likely now that Xbox fans will receive all seven Gears of War games in a single collection.

While speaking on the XboxEra podcast, journalist Shpeshal_Nick (via Pure Xbox) stated that a Gears of War collection is rumored to release this year. Shpeshal_Nick explained that he was “of the belief that” a Gears of War collection could be “coming this year.” The journalist expects that the remastered collection will be Xbox’s big E3 announcement. Shpeshal_Nick stated that “if you go from November 2021 to November 2022 and you look at Microsoft’s big output, it could wind up being Halo, Gears, Forza.”

Considering the success of Microsoft’s recent remaster of the Halo franchise with the Halo: The Master Chief Collection, it’s certainly possible that other popular Xbox IPs will get similar treatment. Gears of War is one of Xbox’s heavy-hitting series, with seven total games developers could remaster into one collection. There have been previous calls for a Marcus Fenix Collection, so Xbox likely knows there would be interest in it. Halo: The Master Chief Collection has received consistent updates since its November 2014 release on Xbox One. The game has also seen an independent release on Microsoft Windows through Steam in 2019 and an enhanced version for Xbox Series X/S in November 2020. It seems only natural that the Gears of War franchise, which first launched in 2006, would be returning to the limelight with remasters of all seven mainline games.

After Starfield and Redfall’s unexpected delay, Xbox’s 2022 lineup is fairly slim. Though Deathloop will likely be released on Xbox consoles toward the end of the year, there are no heavy-hitting first-party IPs for Microsoft Studios. A Gears of War collection could be Xbox’s answer, filling its 2022 lineup with seven fully remastered versions of one of its most popular franchises.
