Being Green Lantern Is Secretly an Audition to Become a Literal God

If it wasn't enough having one of the most powerful weapons in the universe, it looks as though becoming a Green Lantern is almost a guaranteed way of gaining godlike powers.

The Green Lantern Corps is one of the DC Universe's largest peacekeeping forces and is powered by the most stable energy in the Emotional Spectrum, the Green Light of Will. Beings who show the ability to overcome great fear all across the universe are drafted to serve in the illustrious organization and are given a Power Ring to help them fight the most dangerous threats around. With their own willpower and a bit of imagination, even the least capable officer in the Corps becomes a veritable hero thanks to the hard light constructs their rings conjure up. With their numbers and collective will, the Green Lantern Corps is no doubt one of the most powerful organizations in the DCU.

But despite the overwhelming abilities that comes with a Power Ring, several notable Lanterns from Sector 2814 have gone on to achieve even greater power. Hal Jordan was described as one of the greatest Lanterns, though he wound up destroying the Corps after he was corrupted by the Parallax entity. However, that allowed him to walk a path of redemption by serving as the new host for the Spirit of Vengeance, the Spectre. While he never became an agent of the almighty, Kyle Rayner got his own extremely powerful upgrade when he set out to master every light in the Emotional Spectrum. Rayner's success lead him to becoming the White Lantern, one of the most powerful cosmic figures in the DC Universe. And most recently in Green Lantern #12 from Geoffrey Thorne, Marco Santucci, and Tom Raney, John Stewart got in on the celestial action by absorbing an energy known as the Godstorm and ascended to the level of a literal god as the DCU's Emerald Knight.

Seeing so many familiar Lanterns take on god-level powers is certainly an interesting trend. Sector 2814 already has more active Corpsmen on one planet than most other sectors ever see. With nearly half of the Earth-based officers successfully gaining godlike abilities in their own way, the argument could be made that becoming a Green Lantern puts its inductees on a path to vast cosmic power. So why is it that so many members of the Green Lantern Corps are able to gain such powerful forms? Well, the Green Lanterns are fueled by their own willpower, and many Earth-based officers have been shown to have some of the most resilient wills.

From incorporating a force as powerful as the Godstorm or mastering every component of the Emotional Spectrum, John, Kyle and Hal have all stepped up to the challenges presented to them and saw them through no matter the difficulty. Their reward for their examples of willpower was an ascension to practical godhood. There's no doubt that if these three can do it, any Green Lantern with a powerful enough resolve could find their own way to a godlike level upgrade.
