Roz Would Be The Frasier Reboot's Best Returning Character

The Frasier reboot needs Roz. It’s not yet known which characters will return in the Frasier reboot, but Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin) would be the best choice to join the beloved physiatrist in the next chapter of his life. Frasier is a hugely successful spinoff of Cheers, running from 1993-2004 and winning numerous Emmys. Paramount+ has ordered a Frasier reboot/revival, and Roz is arguably the only major character who could return in a meaningful capacity.

Frasier reboot will once more follow  Kelsey Grammer’s lovably pompous psychiatrist who original relocated from Boston to his native Seattle after Cheers ended. In the original series, Dr. Frasier Crane reinvents himself as a local celebrity, hosting a radio psychiatry show alongside his producer, Roz Doyle. By the end of Frasier’s 11 seasons, Roz was happily raising her daughter and had been promoted to KACL's station manager, but her future in radio is uncertain.

So much time has passed since the acclaimed original that the Frasier reboot faces considerable risks. Although Kelsey Grammer has repeatedly expressed his desire for the rest of the cast to return, nobody else has currently signed on, perhaps because some characters would be harder to incorporate into the reboot’s new setting. However, Roz isn’t tied to Seattle quite like the others, and her professional relationship with Frasier would make her the best returning character to join him in his present-day career.

Frasier’s immediate family pose significant problems for the reboot. John Mahoney has passed away, meaning Martin Crane’s death must be addressed. Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and Daphne (Jane Leeves) will be raising a teenage son. Considering the Frasier reboot won’t be set in Seattle, this makes their return particularly doubtful. They might also have had more children over the past 18 years. Combined with the fact his parents will be buried in Seattle, it’s hard to imagine Niles uprooting his life solely to be nearer Frasier. Conversely, Roz doesn’t have such close ties to Seattle. Her daughter would be well into her 20s and probably busy with her own life. Like Frasier, Roz had trouble finding the right partner but was perfectly happy as a single mother. Her pregnancy in season 5 was accidental, and she never expressed a desire to have more children. Roz’s family circumstances make her the best returning character for the Frasier reboot, perhaps with Frasier Crane reaching out to form another partnership.

It's no secret Frasier reveled in his celebrity status, and the series finale saw him sorely tempted to take a TV job in San Francisco. It’s possible he would pursue a television career in the Frasier reboot, or perhaps even host a podcast. Either opportunity presents a natural place for Roz. KACL might not be the same after 18 years, and Roz could easily have moved into another media role that’s more in demand than radio. Frasier might hope the pair working together again could revitalize his career. Roz also has experience in moving across the country for her career, being a native of Wisconsin. This is yet another reason why she may be more inclined to leave Seattle than Niles and Jane Leeves' Daphne. Roz didn’t just prove herself an adept producer, she also regularly provided characters with relationship advice. It appears Frasier might be single once again, so having Roz return for the reboot could provide new insights into dating in 2022. After all, Roz Doyle was often the butt of jokes about her sex life.

Although Roz also teased Frasier and Niles about their dating woes, the reboot could address their outdated attitudes. Tackling her romantic life in the Frasier reboot could provide a more hopeful spin on remaining single - something Frasier often struggled with. Roz was very open about discussing dating with her mother, so flipping the situation with her daughter could also provide plenty of humor, particularly if contrasted with Frasier's relationship with his now-adult son, Frederick.
