Mercedes-Benz Unveils 373 Mile Range All-Electric SUV
Mercedes-Benz today launched an all-electric SUV based on its flagship battery-powered EQS sedan. The move comes as the electric SUV market is heating up in the U.S., thanks to the launch of several models from different manufacturers. Jaguar, BMW and Audi all have at least one crossover electric SUV in the market, with many more in the pipeline. Some of the best and most popular luxury all-electric SUVs include the Audi e-Tron, Jaguar i-Pace, BMW iX, etc.
Maserati also recently announced the Grecale, the first all-electric SUV in the company's history, while Stellantis earlier this year revealed the design of its first all-electric Jeep that will come to the market next year. As for Mercedes, the EQS is not the first SUV announced by the German automaker, but it will be the first such vehicle from the company to hit the North American market after the EQC SUV was delayed indefinitely. In addition, the EQS SUV is part of the company's plans to go all-electric in select markets by the end of this decade.
In a press release on Tuesday, Mercedez-Benz said that the EQS SUV is based on the EQS sedan launched last year. However, the new model has a bigger footprint, taller stance and more spacious interiors with seating for up to seven people. The vehicle will be offered in two trim levels, including the more premium 580 4MATIC version with two electric motors producing 536 horsepower and 633 pound-foot of torque. The other version is the 450+, which comes with a single rear-axle motor with 355 horsepower and 419 pound-feet of torque. In addition, the EQS SUV features an array of technology that includes the 56-inch Hyperscreen found in the EQS sedan, although it will only be offered with the higher trim. Both versions come with a 107.8kWh battery, and according to WLTP estimates, the SUV can travel around 373 miles on a single charge.
To differentiate the EQS SUV from its sedan sibling, it will come with an "intelligent OFFROAD driving mode" that the company says will optimize the all-wheel-drive distribution for "unpaved roads, inclines and terrain." The vehicle will also offer enhanced traction on snow and ice by detecting spinning wheels and adjusting the torque distribution accordingly.
The EQS SUV will be built in the U.S. at Mercedes-Benz's Tuscaloosa, Alabama factory for the American market and will be available for purchase later in 2022. Mercedes-Benz did not release pricing for the EQS SUV, but online speculations suggest that it would likely be priced upwards of $100,000, just like Tesla's Model X. That is to be expected, given that the smaller EQS sedan is priced starting at $102,000.
