Thor Abandoned Asgard to Loki's Care in Its Greatest Hour of Need

Marvel Comics has announced Thor: Lightning and Lament, a one-shot that will open the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the God of Thunder, and be the perfect entry-point for new readers.

Debuting in August 1962 in the pages of Journey into Mystery #83 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Marvel's Thor was obviously inspired by the Norse god, but since then the character has developed a rich mythos of his own and become a key component of the Marvel Universe, both as the favorite son of Asgard and as a founding member of the Avengers. Thor: Lightning and Lament will introduce readers to the intense and often dramatic dynamics of Thor's family, including his love/hate relationship with his adoptive brother Loki, the God of Mischief, and with his overbearing father, Odin.

The one-shot will be written by Ralph Macchio, who worked as a writer and an editor for Marvel for more than three decades (including a very long editor run on Thor), with art by Todd Nauck (Young JusticeFriendly Neighborhood Spider-Man). The story will be set in Thor's past, as in current comics Odin has been killed, and the God of Thunder is the rightful ruler of Asgard as the All-FatherThor: Lightning and Lament will explore an earlier time in the Thunderer's life: with Odin alive but absent from Asgard, Thor abandons the Golden City and leaves it in the hands of Loki, who has to face an assault by legions of trolls. Thor's friend and sometimes love interest, Lady Sif, is wounded in battle and nearing death. With such a dire situation, Thor will probably have to rush back to save his home and loved ones.

With more than sixty years of history, Marvel characters can sometimes be difficult to approach for new readers. The House of Ideas is doing a great job in publishing one-shots and miniseries that are set in the past, which are useful to expand on little-explored moments of their characters' history, and also function as great entry-points for new readers. Silver Surfer: RebirthNew Fantastic Four, and X-Men Legends are all recent examples, with Thor: Lightning and Lament being the latest addition to the list.

Thor is one of the most easily recognizable characters in the Marvel Universe. His adventures are often grand epic tales of strength, courage, and sacrifice. He has battled Frost Giants, space gods, aliens, and common supervillains, while having to balance his duties as the Prince of Asgard and the protector of Earth. This new epic one-shot promises to be a treat for Thor fans and for new readers alike. Thor: Lightning and Lament will be distributed on June 29.
