RHOC: Braunwyn Reveals Homophobia She Experienced From Co-Stars

Braunwyn Windham-Burke, an alum from The Real Housewives of Orange County, revealed that some of her former costars were homophobic towards her during her last season. Viewers were introduced to Braunwyn as an RHOC cast member in 2019 for season 14. Fans met her as a mother of seven, who enjoyed a threesome with Braunwyn's husband, Sean Burke, now and again. When Braunwyn revealed to the cast about her and Sean's private life, they were taken back, to say the least.

For the following season, RHOC was in the midst of COVID-19, and the cast was forced to film from home using their phones to film themselves or FaceTime with their fellow castmates. While in lockdown, Braunwyn was pushed to have some tough conversations with herself and Sean, ultimately leading to a life-altering decision. Braunwyn revealed she was a lesbian while RHOC season 15 was on the air. Now, Braunwyn is living her best life traveling back and forth from Orange County to New York City.

While speaking with Page Six in a joint interview with her 19-year-old daughter Rowan Burke, Braunwyn spoke about the alleged "homophobia" she from her ex-RHOC castmates. "Making off-color jokes about me being intimate with a woman, that’s not OK. Those are microaggressions," said the former reality star. Braunwyn added that after she came out over a year ago, she was upset that she had to prove that she was gay to her costars, calling their actions homophobic. Former castmates like Kelly Dodd, who was fired from RHOC in 2021 along with Braunwyn, frequently made fun of the 44-year-old over speculation that she had been romantically involved with a woman. As the rumors continued, Brauwnyn's castmates would often doubt her sexuality, which happened on many occasions throughout her final season.

Her daughter Rowan, who struggled with an eating disorder, then jumped in to defend her mom and her expression of her sexuality. "It’s really invalidating that people were saying they didn’t believe it or they didn’t think it was true," Rowan explained. "Not just for my mom, but for other people who come out later in life." Braunwyn felt her castmates didn't give her "humanity at a base level," and were only focused on the type of drama they could stir up on the show. Even though Braunwyn wishes her story was told differently on Bravo, she is happy her strength allowed Rowan to come out as pansexual. At the end of the day, the mother-daughter duo both found RHOC to be toxic to their family and are now working towards potentially pursuing an unscripted project that better represents their new modern family dynamic.

Once Braunwyn came out as a lesbian last year, she realized her RHOC costars were never going to be supportive of her. Braunwyn was going through a life-altering time and was learning how to navigate that within her family. With the addition of a reality TV show on her shoulders, in the end, Braunwyn realized it was better for her family to live their new life away from the cameras.
