Obi-Wan Plot Synopsis Teases Kenobi's Crucial Mission In Star Wars Show

An Obi-Wan Kenobi plot synopsis teases the old Jedi's crucial mission on the show. Ewan McGregor's long-awaited return to the Star Wars galaxy is right around the corner, as Lucasfilm gears up marketing for their latest Disney+ series. The first Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer was released earlier this month, shedding light on what audiences can expect when the show premieres in May. Setting up the broad strokes of the narrative, the trailer featured a broken Obi-Wan struggling to process the aftermath of the Clone Wars and the Empire on the hunt for any surviving Jedi.

Obi-Wan's exile on Tatooine will of course be a key component of the show, as Kenobi looks after the young Luke Skywalker. However, it's been confirmed Obi-Wan will leave the desert planet at some point for reasons unknown. Lucasfilm is renowned for keeping story details under wraps during promotion, so little has been revealed about Obi-Wan Kenobi's overall plot. Even an official synopsis is scant on specifics, giving viewers very little to speculate off of.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi landing page on Disney+ includes a short plot summary providing a general overview of the show. It establishes the series' place in the Star Wars timeline and hints at what Obi-Wan will be up to during his adventures. Read it in the space below:

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi embarks on a crucial mission. Kenobi must confront allies turned enemies and face the wrath of the Empire.

The "crucial mission" at the heart of Obi-Wan Kenobi likely has something to do with the Inquisitors, who are set to make their live-action debut in the show. The Jedi hunters were featured throughout the trailer, even arriving on Tatooine as they track down any Order 66 survivors. With Luke living on Tatooine with Owen and Beru Lars, Obi-Wan could take it upon himself to stop the Inquisitors to ensure Luke's safety. Whatever the mission entails, it sounds like this task is what forces Kenobi to leave Tatooine. On-paper, this has the potential to tap into Obi-Wan's detective skills seen in the Star Wars prequels, bringing over a well-received aspect of McGregor's performance from the movies. It will be interesting to see how the story unfolds and how the experience restores Obi-Wan's faith in the galaxy's future.

Obi-Wan's impending rematch with Darth Vader is alluded to with the mention of "allies turned enemies." What's fascinating is the synopsis uses the plural form of those words, suggesting Vader won't be the only old friend Obi-Wan will be facing. Hayden Christensen's Sith Lord is the only confirmed character who fits that bill, raising questions of who else will appear. The live-action Star Wars shows have quickly become known for their surprises, so there could be someone else from the prequel trilogy or Clone Wars returning who hasn't been announced yet. This could also refer to a new character Obi-Wan knew offscreen. Either way, it sounds like there will be plenty to unpack once Obi-Wan Kenobi finally debuts.
