First Look At Evan Rachel Wood As Madonna In Weird Al Movie

Evan Rachel Wood becomes pop icon Madonna in a first look image from WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story. After years of reigning supreme as the king of the pop music parody, the legendary Weird Al is finally getting his own musical biopic with Daniel Radcliffe in the title role.

The accordion-playing novelty artist Weird Al indeed exploded into prominence in the 1980s with parodies of songs by huge pop acts like Madonna, Michael Jackson and Queen. But unlike most novelty acts, Weird Al has endured for decades as a popular artist on his own, and his career has in fact outlasted many of the people he became famous for making fun of. Now like so many of the acclaimed artists Weird Al has parodied, he’s getting the biopic treatment with a movie set to debut on The Roku Channel.

Fans have in fact already been treated to a first look at Harry Potter star Radcliffe as the accordion-wielding master of parody in WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story. Now there’s a new shot from the film showing Radcliffe’s just-announced co-star Wood taking on the role of pop star Madonna (via Rolling Stone). It was also just revealed that Wood will be joined in the film by Julianne Nicholson as Nancy Yankovic, Rainn Wilson as famed DJ and Weird Al mentor Dr. Demento and Toby Huss as Nick Yankovic. See the image of Wood as Madonna in the space below:

Wood of course is best-known for her role as the android Dolores on the mind-bending HBO series Westworld. In this case however she’s playing a flesh-and-blood character and in fact is tackling the task of embodying one of the biggest pop stars of all-time in Madonna. Weird Al's history of course encompasses a lot of big name stars, as he made his career turning their famous hits into silly parody songs. Madonna holds a special place in the Weird Al story however as not only did her smash hit “Like a Virgin” inspire his goof “Like a Surgeon,” but Madonna herself reportedly suggested the parody title to Weird Al via a mutual acquaintance – marking one of the few times Yankovic actually used someone else’s idea for one of his songs.

Musical biopics are of course big business nowadays after both Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman went on to be major hits at the box office. Those films obviously featured major input by the artists being depicted, and such is the case again with WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story as Yankovic himself co-wrote the film’s script along with its director Eric Appel. Indeed with Weird Al lending his particular humorous point-of-view to the movie, along with the personal touch he no doubt brings to the material, WEIRD is surely set to be a very different type of biopic. And Wood’s participation in the role of Madonna only adds to the movie’s star power.
