The Rock Confirms Super Bowl Appearance: Will Black Adam Trailer Release?

Dwayne Johnson confirms he will be making a special pregame appearance at the Super Bowl, raising curiosity for a Black Adam trailer to release. Johnson has been attached to playing the character for over a decade, having previously been eyed to bring Shazam to life on screen before finding more interest in taking on the role of the villain, Black Adam. After languishing in development hell for sometime, it would regain steam when Warner Bros. began putting together plans for its DC Extended Universe, splitting Shazam! and Black Adam into separate movies before they face off.

The film explores the origin of Black Adam, an antihero from Kahndaq who gained his powers from the wizard Shazam but was imprisoned for his abuse of his powers. Johnson leads the ensemble cast of Black Adam alongside Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Sarah Shahi as Adrianna Tomaz, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor FateJungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra is at the helm for the DCEU effort, and with the film set for a July release, audiences may finally get a look at the film in the near future.

Should Johnson's Super Bowl appearance lead to a Black Adam trailer release, it would mark an interesting change for Warner Bros. and the NFL championship. Since the DCEU properly launched with 2013's Man of Steel, the studio has not released any official trailers for the franchise during the Super Bowl, the closest being a Tide ad starring Gal Gadot and utilizing her look and setup from the Wonder Woman 1984 opening mall scene, a trick later utilized for a DirecTV ad. WB's lack of promotion during the game has largely stemmed from the increasing cost of purchasing advertisements, which has reportedly surpassed the $6.5 million mark for this year's game for a 30-second ad.

With Black Adam set to hit theaters this July, now would be the ultimate time for WB to release a trailer for the film, be it at the Super Bowl or a general release online. Given rumors are swirling of a new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer premiering during the game and a good portion of Johnson's fan base will be tuning in to watch it, WB may have elected to shell out the money to debut a trailer for the first time in over a decade. Only time will tell when the Super Bowl airs on Sunday, February 13.
