Raised By Wolves: Why The Serpent Didn't Attack Campion
In Raised by Wolves season 2, the serpent approached Campion but didn't attack or kill him — why? One of the most significant developments of last season was the birth of Mother's "child", a serpent-like creature with sharp teeth that is able to fly. The serpent creature, aptly named Number Seven, is seen a what appears to be its full size in Raised by Wolves season 2, still able to fly and recreate Mother's Necromancer scream (albeit without the damage). Mother believes it must be killed and sets out to hunt and destroy it, as it roams freely in the newly-discovered Tropical Zone. However, she soon discovers that all is not what it seems with Number Seven.
The birth of Number Seven was one of the most jaw-dropping additions to Raised by Wolves season 1. Mother, a Necromancer android reprogrammed to protect and raise children on the planet Kepler-22b, became "pregnant" in the show, seemingly by way of meeting with her programmer in a digital environment. She believed the creature to be a child of some sort, but is shocked to find that it's actually a monstrous flying serpent when born. With only one of her original children still alive, the boy named Campion, as well as five other "kidnapped" children in her care, Mother deems that she must destroy her new baby, attempting to fly into the planet's molten core with her android partner, Father, and Number Seven feeding off of her "milk". However, she survives the suicide attempt, with the creature flying off into the Tropical Zone, where it begins to haunt the newly-arrived Atheist humans, as well as the remaining (and now captive) Mithraic.
At one point Campion runs off on his own in Raised by Wolves season 2 and is confronted by Number Seven. Now fully grown and ten times the size of a human, the creature looks frightening enough and appears menacing. However, as Campion tries to avoid the creature, hiding in a tree, he finds that it has no plans to kill or devour him, simply circling curiously and inspecting the boy before flying off. Campion is relieved, as well as enlightened, as he could tell that the creature meant him no harm. The question then becomes why it didn't attack Campion, as Mother suspected that it would have to feed off of blood and flesh to survive, as that's what it craved while gestating. As it turns out, Mother discovers that the creature is actually a herbivore, feeding on local pumpkins and vegetation, with no desire for blood. This is likely the biggest reason it didn't attack Campion, but there are also the familial considerations, as Campion was gestated and born by way of Mother as an embryo, which by all accounts could have created some type of DNA connection with Number Seven.
While Mother is synthetic, she is also a highly-advanced android, far beyond a simplistic model. A Necromancer by design, her abilities and programming to raise and birth children makes her something entirely different than has been seen before, prompting the possibility that her children, born from embryos or not, have some type of DNA connection. It's unclear how Mother became pregnant with Number Seven, but it appears to be something stimulated by her programming, although it's entirely possible that it has some genetic reasoning as well that has yet to be explained. Either way, the birth of Number Seven shows that her life-giving abilities go beyond even her understanding and that the connection between her, Campion and her new serpent-child is more than just circumstance, but biological in nature.
It's also worth noting that Number Seven is still a child, even if it appears fully grown. The gestation period and rate of maturation seen even just at the end of Raised by Wolves season 1 implies that its journey to adulthood will be swift, but given the uncertainty of what it actually is, be it a technologically creature bioweapon or something else entirely, it's impossible to know what it will ultimately become. By that reasoning, it may have avoided attacking Campion immediately due to its lack of understanding or awareness as to who or what Campion is. While Number Seven has been alive for many months by the time Raised by Wolves season two kicks off, there is still much for it to learn and much for Mother and Campion to learn, even as they attempt to bond with and protect it.
