Batman: Arkham Series Could Be Coming To Switch, Per Retailer Leak
The critically-acclaimed Batman: Arkham series could be coming to the Nintendo Switch this summer, at least according to a recent leak from a French retailer. Rocksteady took gaming and comic book fans by surprise with the release of Batman: Arkham Asylum, a 2009 blockbuster that shattered the Dark Knight’s previously lackluster video game reputation with a haunting atmosphere and solid gameplay. 2010’s Batman: Arkham City would build on Asylum’s foundation by adding in a gritty open-world filled with criminals and side quests in addition to a parallel subplot that allowed players to step into the role of Batman’s longtime foil/love interest Catwoman. Finally, 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight would finally put players behind the wheel of the Batmobile, though fans were mixed on how this was implemented.
While the Batman: Arkham series was already available to PlayStation and Xbox players from the very beginning, Nintendo gamers have been largely left out of the Dark Knight’s latest and most successful interactive adventures. In fact, the only Nintendo port of the Arkham series to date is Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition for the Wii U, which added special functionality for the console’s touchscreen controller along with some alternate power armor skins for Batman and Catwoman. Even when the three mainline installments of the Arkham series were re-released in 2018’s Batman: Arkham Collection, it was only made available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC through outlets like Steam - with no word on when it would be coming to the Nintendo Switch.
This might be changing soon, as VGC reports that Batman: Arkham Collection could be coming to the Nintendo Switch this summer. French retail website WTT has a Batman: Arkham Collection Switch port posted for a price of €59.99 ($68.68), with a placeholder release date set for August 31, 2022. While neither Rocksteady nor publisher WB Games has officially confirmed that Batman: Arkham Collection is being ported to the Nintendo Switch at this point, it is worth noting that WTT previously leaked the Nintendo Switch version of The Witcher 3 before it was released back in 2019, adding credence to its claims here.
Rocksteady’s next DC-based project will shift focus away from Batman and his infamous rogue’s gallery, as the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League will instead put players in the role of the madcap Task Force X on a mission to eliminate Earth’s heroes after they are taken over by the sinister Brainiac. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League was recently delayed until 2023, but recent rumors have suggested that Rocksteady could return to Batman and his plethora of supporting characters in a new Batman: Arkham game after Kill The Justice League's eventual release. In the meantime, WB Montreal’s upcoming Gotham Knights looks to carry on the Arkham series’ stealth and combat formula in a rebooted storyline that sees Batman’s old protégées carry on his mission to defend Gotham following his apparent death.
While certain aspects of the Batman: Arkham series might not have aged well (namely the character designs for certain female characters and trophy-gathering subplots involving the Riddler), Rocksteady’s trilogy is still well-regarded among gaming and comic fans. If WTT’s recent leak is to be believed, Nintendo Switch owners could finally get to enjoy all three mainline entries of the Batman: Arkham franchise later this year.
