The MCU Fantastic Four's Perfect Thing Casting Is Being Ignored
Marvel Studios are ignoring the perfect casting for MCU's Ben Grimm/The Thing for their upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. After teasing the film in 2019's San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige officially announced the return of Marvel's first family during 2020's Disney Investor Day presentation. The long-awaited MCU debut of the Fantastic Four will be helmed by Jon Watts, the director of Spider-Man's MCU trilogy. Not much else is known about the film, as Marvel is still holding all casting and plot details close to their chest.
Ever since the Fantastic Four's MCU movie was announced, fans have been pitching casting ideas across social media. The most ubiquitous fan-casting so far is that of John Krasinski as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic and Emily Blunt as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman. As for the other two members of the Fantastic Four, The Human Torch and The Thing, MCU enthusiasts have been less vocal about their opinions. Recently, however, rumors of Superbad actor Seth Rogan playing The Thing have surfaced online.
Oddly enough, Seth Rogan as Ben Grimm has not gained the same traction as the other casting suggestions, despite Rogan being perfect for the role. Similar to Thanos and Groot, the role of the actor playing The Thing will be mostly voice-over, since Ben Grimm's body will likely be completely computer-generated after he gets his powers. Rogan could be the perfect actor to voice the role, as he can hammer home the emotional baggage of the character while at the same time faithfully adapting The Thing's comedic personality.
Since The Thing would be another CGI MCU character for the majority of his screen time, the actor's voice would be the main concern when casting him. Seth Rogan has the deep voice necessary to portray the rough character. One of the best parts of any Fantastic Four adaptation, barring 2015's disaster, is the hilarious rivalry between Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm. Seth Rogan has proven time and time again that he can deliver great comedic performances, especially when he can bounce off of other actors. Casting Rogan as The Thing could highlight the humorous side of the character and make him a fan favorite, especially if the actor playing Johnny Storm possesses similar comedic chops.
On the other hand, Seth Rogan also proved that he can play serious roles with his supporting role in 2015's Steve Jobs, which is essential to Grimm's character. One of the most intriguing aspects of The Thing is how his deformed rocky appearance affects his social life and his romantic relationships, which takes a heavy emotional toll on Grimm. While the character is comedic most of the time, his darker side cannot be ignored as it has become essential to the character. Rogan can portray that aspect excellently as well.
Over the past two decades, previous Fantastic Four big-screen adaptations featured Michael Chiklis and Jamie Bell portraying a very serious version of The Thing, focusing more on the character's emotional baggage rather than his humorous side. Seth Rogan could balance both sides of the character out, giving Grimm the depth of character he possesses in the source material. The MCU Fantastic Four reboot will likely not release until 2024, but as the movie nears the start of production, casting details are sure to start surfacing, and fans will finally learn who is finally bringing Marvel's first family into the MCU.
