Cox's career spans many movies and television shows that show his range as an actor. He has shined in lead roles and stole the show as supporting characters. He has shown his comedic side and played in intense dramas. And looking at Cox's most acclaimed projects at Metacritic shows how impressive his career has been.

10 Casanova (2005) - 57

The period comedy Casanova followed a complicated story of intertwining love triangles and mistaken identities. Heath Ledger stars as the titular young man who is searching for love while also being accused of being a controversial feminist writer.

Cox joined in on the fun as a young man who is also caught up in the various love stories while seeking to follow his own heart. The movie was seen as an unoriginal yet somewhat entertaining romp featuring a charismatic performance from Heath Ledger.

9 The Merchant Of Venice (2004) - 63

Cox joined some big-name actors in the William Shakespeare adaptation, The Merchant of Venice. Al Pacino starred as Shylock, the mistreated and vengeful money lender who makes a shocking deal to seek revenge on a disrespectful merchant.

While the intrigue surrounding the main plot was far more compelling, Cox was part of the more comedic side of the movie with its subplot about plots for romance. The movie was called a satisfying adaptation of the iconic play with a powerful performance from Pacino.

8 The Defenders (2017) - 63

Following the very successful plan of the MCU's Phase 1, the Marvel Netflix series introduced various heroes in their individual solo shows before bringing them all together in a team-up series. The Defenders saw Matt Murdock teaming with Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron First to take on a dangerous threat.

As fun as it was to see all these characters sharing the screen, many critics felt that the heroes worked better on their own. The disappointing result of the anticipated team-up may have spelled the end of the Netflix shows.

7 Stardust (2007) - 66

Cox earned one of his first high-profile starring roles when headlining Matthew Vaughn's fantasy adventure, Stardust. Cox played a young man living in a small countryside town who travels into a magical land to retrieve a fallen star for the woman he loves.

Along with Cox in the lead role, the movie featured an impressive cast. including Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Robert De Niro. Its mix of fantasy adventure and comedy worked better for some critics than others, but the movie has developed something of a cult following in recent years.

6 Moby Dick (2011) - 68

Cox seems to have had a trend of starring in adaptations of many classic works throughout his career. He took on one of the most famous novels of all time with the television adaptation of Herman Melville's Moby Dick. Cox starred as the young sailor Ishmael who joins an expedition led by an obsession captain to track a deadly white whale.

5 Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) - 71

Even though Spider-Man: No Way Home provided an emotional and thrilling journey for Tom Holland's Peter Parker, many fans were talking about the various surprising characters who were also included in the adventure.

One of the biggest surprises was Cox as Matt Murdock making a brief but exciting appearance, giving hope of Daredevil's future in the MCU. The movie itself was seen as a funny and wild story that mostly pulled off its ambitious ideas thanks to its crowd-pleasing finale.

4 The Theory of Everything (2014) - 71

The biopic The Theory of Everything found Eddie Redmayne in his Oscar-winning role as Stephen Hawking in the story of his incredible career, his declining health, and his heartwarming relationship with his first wife, Jane.

Cox played Jonathan, a young man who befriends Jane and becomes very close with the Hawking family. Some critics felt that the movie stuck too closely to the predictable biopic formula but the performances from Redmayne and Felicity Jones received considerable praise and were seen as elevating the movie.

3 Daredevil (2015-2018) - 75

Cox was not a well-known actor to American audiences when he was cast as the iconic Marvel hero in Daredevil, but he quickly proved himself to be the right actor for the job. For three seasons, the show followed Matt Murdock's attempts to clean up Hell's Kitchen, both as a blind lawyer and a masked vigilante.

2 Downton Abbey (2010-2015) - 80

The period costume drama genre has always been a fascination for many audiences and Downton Abbey took an interesting approach to telling such a story. The series was set in the early 1900s and explored the lives of an aristocratic family as well as their servant staff over the years.

Cox appeared in the first episode of the series and was part of one of Downton Abbey's biggest scandals as a closeted gay man in the midst of a secret affair. The show's large ensemble and its engrossing look at the era of the story helped make it a huge hit.

1 Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014) - 83

After HBO had so much success with The Sopranos, they sought to tell another story of organized crime, but this time looking back in the past. Boardwalk Empire told the story of Atlantic City's illegal alcohol business during the Prohibition Era.

Cox appeared in two seasons of the show as Owen Sleater and joined an impressive cast that also included Steve Buscemi, Michael Shannon, and Michael Kenneth Williams. The gripping storylines and complex characters helped to make Boardwalk Empire another acclaimed HBO drama.
