Bachelor: Clayton Echard Doesn’t Regret Offering Salley Carson A Rose

Clayton Echard, star of The Bachelor season 26, said that he doesn’t regret offering Salley Carson a rose, even though she ultimately rejected him and left the show before the season officially began. Before Clayton's season premiered, rumors were swirling that Salley, a 26-year-old spine surgery robot operator from Virginia, had been engaged just weeks before she left to join the show. On the first episode, Salley revealed that she was actually supposed to have her wedding the same weekend that the show began filming, but had called it off due to a "lack of trust" in the relationship. She said that the breakup was heart-breaking, but she wanted nothing more than to find love and have children, something that Clayton has often expressed as well.

Salley had doubts as the show was about to begin, and went to see Clayton in his hotel room to discuss her situation. When she expressed her concerns about being on the show, Clayton tried to reassure her by offering her a rose, an unprecedented move since the show had not even started yet. He admitted to Salley that he was doing it because he felt a connection with her, and she agreed that she felt it too. However, she ultimately decided that she could not stay, saying, "My heart’s just not ready." She said that she was sorry, but Clayton said that there was no reason to apologize. He thanked her for talking with him. They hugged, and, just hours before the limousines were about to pull up to the mansion, Salley quit the show, rejecting Clayton’s first rose of the season.

In an interview with Us Weekly, Clayton revealed that he doesn’t regret giving Salley the rose despite the outcome. He addressed his critics, who felt that he should not have tried to continue the relationship, saying, "Why did I offer her a rose after, like, she spills the beans and says, 'I was supposed to get married today, I was previously engaged'? I didn’t see that as a red flag." He explained that people only saw two minutes of their hour-long conversation on the show, and reminded viewers that "she came to me instead of just going home. She showed up to my hotel room and it’s like, 'Why would she do that?'" Clayton said that he believed that Salley went to him because she wasn't yet sure about her decision. He shared that she expressed to him that she was unsure if she was over her last relationship, but meeting him made her feel that maybe she could look past it.

Although Salley did not accept Clayton's first rose, the fact that he offered it to her shows what a genuinely kind-hearted and understanding man he is. He wanted to make her feel comfortable enough to stay, even though the situation was awkward and unusual. Fans have speculated that this segment was aired to create drama or because Salley will be coming back. Whatever the motivation, it will be interesting to see if Salley does return to the show, and how Clayton would react to her reappearance. Either way, Salley helped fans to see that Clayton is a caring gentleman.
