What Will Apple's AR/VR Headset Look Like? Here's Our Best Glimpse Yet

Apple's long-awaited AR/VR headset is only months away, and leading up to its anticipated release, one render creator has offered the best glimpse yet at what the headset could look like. Apple's generally never the first company to enter a product niche, but when it does, people stop and take notice. The iPhone wasn't the first smartphone ever created, but it dramatically changed the entire industry and still has an influence on companies today. The Apple Watch was far from the first smartwatch, yet it's now the most popular on the market.

Following huge successes with phones, watches, computers, and wireless earbuds, all eyes are now on Apple to enter the virtual/augmented reality ring. Over the past few years, we've seen gadgets like the Oculus Quest, HTC Vive, Microsoft HoloLens, and Ray-Ban Stories. The niche for AR and VR headsets is clearly building, and it's doing so without any input from Apple. However, that's expected to change very soon.

Rumors are currently pointing to Apple's first AR/VR headset launching sometime in 2022. There have been various leaks and mockups of what its design could look like, but they've all left something to the imagination. Now, render creator Ian Zelbo has shared a trio of high-quality product renders of the device. The renders are based on earlier reporting from The Information and showcase the device in crisp 8K images. Zelbo's previously done renders for AirTag, iPhone 13, and other Apple gadgets leading up to their release — all of which have been incredibly representative of the final product.

Assuming Apple's headset actually looks like this, it could be one of the best-designed gadgets in the niche so far. The front of the headset is taken up entirely by curved glass, with the frame touting a sleek (likely aluminum) construction. Behind that glass is a mesh fabric cushion — not unlike the cushions used for the earcups on AirPods Max. That AirPods Max inspiration is also seen with the oval button on top of the headset.

Moving to the headset's strap, there's clear inspiration taken from the Apple Watch's sport band. It appears to have the same silicon design, loops, and metal clasp. The back of the headband also bears a resemblance to Apple's AirTag Loop accessory thanks to its open design. Not only does the whole package look good, but it should also result in a very comfortable wearing experience. If the face cushion and head strap are even half as comfortable as the products they're inspired by, that's worth getting excited for.

It's impossible to say if Apple's AR/VR headset will look exactly like this, but considering the current rumors and Zelbo's past experience, it's safe to say this is a pretty accurate look at what's to come. Now, it's just a matter of being patient and waiting for Apple to actually announce the thing.
