The Unforgivable cast and character guide. Netflix has been making a name for itself in the movie industry, with a slew of acclaimed films like The Power of the Dog and The Harder They Fall continuing to put the streaming service on the map. Next up is The Unforgivable, which has quite a number of famous actors in its cast, including Sandra Bullock.
Based on the 2009 British miniseries by Sally Wainright, The Unforgivable follows Ruth Slater following her release from prison. After 20 years of serving her time in the wake of being convicted of murder, Ruth goes in search of her younger sister Katie in a bid to gain some closure. However, while Ruth is attempting to move on with her life, the sons of the man she allegedly shot won’t let her go of the past and plan to exact their revenge after discovering she’s finally out of jail.
The Unforgivable is directed by Nora Fingscheidt from a screenplay by Peter Craig, Hillary Seitz, and Courtenay Miles. The film, like many others, was delayed due to the pandemic. Following a limited theater release, The Unforgivable finally lands on Netflix. Here’s who stars in the film, what role the actors play, and what other films and TV shows viewers have seen them in before.
Ruth Slater is a convict who was sentenced to 20 years in prison after murdering a sheriff in Washington. She’s let out of prison and struggles to put her life back together in the aftermath. Ruth is played by Sandra Bullock in The Unforgivable. The actress is known best for her roles in Speed, Miss Congeniality, Gravity, The Blind Side, The Proposal, Practical Magic, Ocean’s Eight, and A Time to Kill, among several other films.
John Ingram is a corporate lawyer who decides to help Ruth in her family law case pro bono. He is married to his wife Liz and the pair have two sons. The family moved in and are now living in Ruth’s childhood home that she left behind after going to prison. In The Unforgivable, John is portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio. The actor is known for roles in Men in Black, The Cell, Full Metal Jacket, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Jurassic World, and the Marvel Netflix series Daredevil.
Liz Ingram is John’s wife. While her husband is more willing to give Ruth a chance, Liz is suspicious of her and doesn’t trust her intentions. Liz is played by Viola Davis, who has starred in Widows, Fences, The Suicide Squad (and 2016’s Suicide Squad), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, How to Get Away with Murder, Prisoners, The Help, Eat Pray Love, Ender’s Game, and Beautiful Creatures.
Blake is a coworker of Ruth’s at the fish factory. The pair grow closer over the course of The Unforgivable. Blake is portrayed by Jon Bernthal, who is known for his roles in King Richard, Baby Driver, The Wolf of Wall Street, Fury, The Walking Dead, The Many Saints of Newark, Those Who Wish Me Dead, Wind River, and The Accountant. Bernthal also played Frank Castle in the Marvel Netflix series Daredevil before going on to reprise the role as the lead character in The Punisher.
Keith Whelan is the son of the sheriff Ruth killed and is unhappy about the fact Ruth is now out of prison, believing she should pay for what she did to his dad. Thomas Guiry is best known for playing Scotty Smalls in The Sandlot. Guiry has also appeared in Mystic River, Black Hawk Down, The Revenant, and guest starred on Law & Order.
Steve Whelan is Keith’s younger brother who is hesitant at first about going after Ruth because of his infant daughter. Steve is portrayed by Will Pullen, who has primarily starred in short films like Other People’s People and You Say Hello. Pullen has also guest starred in TV shows like The Good Wife, The Americans, and Dickinson.
Vincent Cross is Ruth Slater’s parole officer who makes sure she is employed and not trying to revisit old wounds. Vincent is portrayed by Rob Morgan, who most recently starred in the Netflix original film Don’t Look Up alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Morgan has also appeared in The Photograph, Stranger Things, This is Us, Just Mercy, Monsters and Men, The Last Black San Francisco, and Daredevil, where he played Turk Barrett, a role he would go on to reprise in Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist.
Michael Malcolm is Katherine’s adoptive father who is hesitant to allow Ruth any contact with his daughter. Michael is portrayed by Richard Thomas, who is best known for 1990’s It, The Waltons, and The Americans.
Rachel Malcolm is Katherine’s adoptive mother and the wife of Michael, with whom she argues about whether or not they should tell their daughter the truth of her past. Linda Emond has been in The Big Sick, Indignation, Julie and Julia, Gemini Man, Lodge 49, and has guest starred in the hit series Succession.
Aisling Franciosi As Katherine “Katie” Malcolm - Katherine is Ruth’s younger sister who was taken from Ruth after her arrest and adopted by the Malcolm family. Katherine is played by Aisling Franciosi, who is most famous for playing Lyanna Stark in Game of Thrones. Franciosi has also starred in The Nightingale, The Fall, and the series Genius.
Emma Nelson as Emily Malcolm - Emily is Katherine’s adoptive sister and the eldest daughter of Rachel and Michael Malcolm. Emma Nelson is known for her role in Where’d You Go, Bernadette, with The Unforgivable being her second major feature film.
Jessica McLeod as Hannah Whelan - Hannah Whelan is the wife of Steve Whelan. The couple have a daughter together. Jessica McLeod has appeared in the series One of Us is Lying, You Me Her, and Death Note.
W. Earl Brown as Mac Whelan - Mac Whelan was the local sheriff, the father of Steve and Keith. He was the man who Ruth allegedly shot. Besides The Unforgivable, W. Earl Brown has starred in There’s Something About Mary, Deadwood, Preacher, True Detective, and Being John Malkovich.
Orlando Lucas as Ryan Ingram - Ryan is Liz and John’s son. Orlando Lucas has appeared in Altered Carbon, iZombie, and has guest starred on The Good Doctor.
Jude Wilson as Daniel Ingram - Daniel is also Liz and John’s son, and Ryan’s brother. Jude Wilson has guest starred in TV shows such as Riverdale, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and the TV movie Under Wraps.
Neli Kastrinos as Katie - Neli Kastrinos plays the five-year-old version of Katie, Ruth’s sister. Besides The Unforgivable, Kastrinos has also been in the series Yellowjackets.
