Simu Liu Felt Like He Was Going to Throw Up After Shang-Chi Audition

Simu Liu recalls his Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings audition with director Daniel Destin Cretton, revealing it left him feeling he may throw up. Liu made his debut in Cretton's 2021 Marvel superhero origin story alongside Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, and Ben Kingsley. Liu is expected to return as the hero in future MCU projects, including Shang-Chi 2.

Liu joined the MCU as one of the most anticipated heroes of Phase 4 of the MCU. Amongst the return of heroes such as Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Vision (Paul Bettany), Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Hawkeye (Clint Barton), and Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Shang-Chi was one of the newest heroes to join the MCU following the end of the Infinity Saga alongside Monica Rambeau (Teyonnah Parris), the Eternals, and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). While Liu has become one of the faces of the MCU's future, the star has been open about his journey to playing Shang-Chi and has now reflected on his audition for the titular role in Cretton's Marvel film.

Speaking alongside Cretton and Marvel head Kevin Feige to THR while reflecting on the production of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Liu recalled his audition with the director. Liu revealed that rather than focusing on the skills necessary to perform the martial arts stunts or other heroic traits, Cretton was searching for an actor who could capture Shang-Chi's vulnerabilities and humanity. After exiting the audition, Liu stated he felt that he could throw up, but also believed that he had succeeded in the audition. Check out Liu's full recollection below.

"At no point did he bring up the martial arts. At no point did he bring up the need to be anything other than human. He was looking for somebody who really exemplified the uncomfortable, insecure, anxiety of what it means to be a human being. I came out of the casting office literally feeling like I was going to throw up because I never thought that I had a chance before that moment. After meeting him, I was, ‘Oh, I think I nailed this thing.’”

Liu has been open in previous interviews about the emotional side of Shang-Chi's production. Following the release of the film, Liu posted a heartfelt message online, thanking the cast and crew. Liu has also passionately discussed why Cretton must return for Shang-Chi 2, as following confirmation that Marvel Studios would move forward with the film, Liu expressed how invested the director was, and that the production would need him.

Liu's journey to joining the MCU has been a memorable one. From performing as Spider-Man for parties to tweeting out his desires to play the hero, and ultimately breaking pandemic box-office trends as one of the highest performing films of 2021, Liu's journey has been honest and inspiring to witness. With Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings not only introducing the hero but also introducing several story elements, perhaps it won't be long until Liu returns to the big screen.
