Samsung May Be Working On A Bizarre Phone With Two Sliding Screens
Samsung might be working on a very strange-looking phone that includes two sliding screens that create a stair-step shape when both are extended. Innovative designs are always fun to check out and this is one of the most bizarre to appear recently. While it would take a while to get accustomed to the look, it actually seems to have some practical uses.
Samsung is a technology leader, pushing the limits of what is possible in various industries. Beyond its exciting flexible screen designs that are well represented by the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, the company also makes wall-sized televisions, refrigerators with monitors built into the doors, and a steam cleaning clothes closet. As wild as some of these ideas sound, they are real products that solve real-world problems that Samsung was bold enough to address.
In a recent patent document that was found by Let's Go Digital, Samsung describes a new type of sliding screen phone that expands in two directions, becoming both taller and wider. Something odd about the end result is the appearance that a corner is missing at the upper-right when fully extending both panels. Since both need to slide from an edge, there isn't a way to fill the corner. It looks a bit funny, yet the added screen space does have some interesting uses that Samsung highlights.
A Samsung phone with a dual-slide screen might never be made, however, the concept is interesting and the tech giant considered it valuable enough to invest in a patent application. The extendable phone screen described features a main display that slides out from the right edge with a touchscreen gesture. This portion is part of the main display and it unrolls to extend. The secondary display is actually hidden within the phone until raised from the top with a swipe up or similar gesture. Telescoping supports extend behind the panels to provide rigidity.
There are a surprising number of good examples provided in the patent document of this unusual phone design. When using the camera app, the main display can show a wider view while the secondary has a selfie view, which might appeal to vloggers. Gaming might have controls on the secondary screen while the action takes place on the main display. A keyboard might appear on the main sliding panel, while the original screen area plays a video and comments appear in the small slide-out display. Suddenly, this bizarre-looking Samsung phone document with two sliding screens begins to look more practical and interesting. Will it ever be made? We have no idea.
