Riverdale: 7 Unpopular Opinions About Betty | Screen Rant

Out of the core four in Riverdale, Betty is one of the most well-loved characters. Her outward appearance of the girl next door is quite the opposite to her tough and gritty actions on the show, which fans adore. However, as popular as she may be, Betty Cooper is not exempt from discussion on Reddit where users share some often unpopular opinions about her character.

While most fans love her for being a sweet girl with an edge, some viewers think she is boring, a bad friend, a narcissist, and that many of her actions in general, as well as relationships, are highly questionable.

In season 2, episode 5, Betty was tasked by the Black Hood to end her friendship with Veronica, or he would kill the latter. To do that, Betty went off on Veronica during their drug-fueled party and said some really mean things, but viewers think that she may have meant every word she said about Veronica being trashy, mean, and manipulative. Brynrallo feels that they are all "things that she believes deep down."

While Betty's words may resonate with watchers, it's almost impossible that she meant them. As a character who had been slut-shamed by her own mother, there's no way that Betty would actually think that her friend's "plunging necklines" would be a problem. Betty had to be very convincing to save V, so she had to go all out to prove that she and Veronica were not real friends.

The most contentious opinion one can have about Betty is that she's just a terrible character full stop, as well as being quite self-absorbed. Sandman4002 on Reddit is of that opinion, and they say "Betty is narcissistic and the worst character on the show."

Betty is by no means without her faults, but calling her selfish and narcissistic is quite harsh. Out of all the characters on the show, she has suffered the most loss, not limited to her father being a serial killer, Polly being killed by the Mothmen, and finding out her half-brother was a killer who also died. Still, she keeps helping the town by investigating crime and putting her life on the line, so while she isn't a saint, it's difficult to say that she's selfish or narcissistic in any way.

One of the few things that make no sense about Riverdale's Betty was her strange second persona "Dark Betty." In season one, her inner demons only consisted of a kinky side that enjoyed some role-playing, but the show made it sound a lot more serious which most fans didn't like. Some fans, however, certainly did. Redditor jnellll was of the unpopular opinion that this other Betty was quite enjoyable: " I love Dark Betty and the Gargoyle king."

Liking a character's traits is subjective, but there's no denying that the writers never handled Dark Betty well. They could have explored her further and with some nuance, but instead chose to put her in a wig and lingerie to do webcam antics. She also disappeared very quickly and seemed more of a plot device for shock value than an actual layer of the character, which was what made Dark Betty so cringeworthy.

One of the biggest fan ships in the history of television is Bughead, who often competes with Varchie for the title of the best couple in Riverdale. Fans just love the two unlikely teenagers coming together to form a fun couple. However, not all Riverdale viewers are in agreement. LetThatFeverPlay can't see the chemistry between the writer and FBI agent translate on-screen at all: "I don't know if it's because I'm so sick of seeing them, or what? But they come across so flat to me... I feel nothing when I watch them."

Bughead may not be perfect but they're definitely not boring. Fans loved their intense scenes in the trailer, their "ah-ha!" moments when they solved mysteries, and even when they were broken up by the Black Hood, they had a connection. Betty and Jughead share so many common interests and do help each other when they can, which makes them quite an interesting romance.

In season 1, Betty threw Jughead a surprise party for his birthday to cheer him up after a year of bad news, homelessness, and an incapable father plaguing him, which infuriated Jughead. Later, as Jughead apologized to his girlfriend of a few weeks, some viewers felt like it should have been the other way round. Jughead had told Betty not to make a big deal of his birthday, so Betty should have been the apologetic one. Brynnrallo said, "Jughead had every right to be p***** off when Betty & Archie threw him the surprise birthday."

It's important to remember that Betty and Jughead were quite new as a couple at this point and knew very little about one another. The intent behind the party was pure and Jughead's reaction was very visceral and public. He humiliated Betty in front of all their classmates, so the apology from him was not unwarranted.

Riverdale boasts some incredible couples with iconic scenes, and Archie and Betty are one of the oldest but also newest ships that fans love. However, not all of Riverdale's fanbase is so positive about them. Redditors like kjmzzmjk think that Betty would eventually get bored of Archie and move on to the next more interesting person and that their chemistry was only limited to when they were teenagers. They said "I hard agree with betty getting bored of Archie and I feel like their relationship would only work well in high school." Miserable-Cupcake-57 also agreed with them stating: "I think Betty and Archie are not a perfect match. They never were. Only in theory when they were kids."

This theory has already been proven wrong with the seven-year time jump where Betty and Archie actually get along better than they did as adults than when they were angsty kids. They are mature enough to articulate and act on their earlier feelings and actually make for a good couple.

Fans of Archie and Betty have been waiting to see the two end up together, and after four seasons of will they, won't they, there was some progress on the Barchie front, but Redditors don't like the ship for moral reasons. Flowerchild4ever thinks that Betty's lies and the cheating muddied the relationship, and says "I cannot root for Barchie. It just doesn’t sit well with me."

Firstly, to give Betty flak and not fault Archie for the exact same thing is arguably both sexist and hypocritical. They were both equally involved. Secondly, Jughead also cheated on Betty with Toni, and Archie swung like a pendulum between Josie, Valerie, and Veronica too. Veronica and Jughead kissed to get even with Archie and Betty, so almost every ship comprises some level of deceit, not just Barchie.
