Juggernaut’s Only Weakness is Revealed in Marvel's Apocalyptic Future
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Wastelanders: Hawkeye #1
Cain Marko aka the Juggernaut has been an unstoppable force since being imbued with the demonic magic of Cyttorak, rendering him unstoppable so long as he is drawing from the mystical energy. The Juggernaut has been banished to an asteroid, thrown into hell, and was even reduced to a skeleton, and still he did not go down. After fans are given the chance to take a look decades into the future, however, they learn that the Juggernaut’s true and only weakness is time.
In Wastelanders: Hawkeye #1 by Ethan Sacks and Ibraim Roberson, fans are thrown back into the world of Old Man Logan, a post-apocalyptic wasteland where Marvel’s villains have won, and the heroes are either dead, corrupted, or scrambling to pick up the pieces of the fallen world. Hawkeye, now a blind old man in this dystopian future, is a traveling hero who goes from town to town, stopping bad guys in his path. He hears that a man has taken over a small town and so Hawkeye goes to stop him, not knowing who that man truly was. When he approached the tyrant, only to find out he was standing face-to-face with the Juggernaut.
When Hawkeye realized he was about to fight the Unstoppable Juggernaut, he was immediately fear-stricken, though he shouldn’t have been. Despite the demonic magic that flowed through Cain Marko’s veins, his body still aged all the same which made him much weaker than his younger self. The Juggernaut’s joints ached and were stiff, and his fighting was way less ferocious. Hawkeye was easily able to dodge every attack the Juggernaut threw at him, and when their fight was interrupted by Old Man Daredevil, the Juggernaut was as good as defeated. Matt Murdock lured the Juggernaut to the edge of a mountain, and when the villain charged, he wasn’t able to stop himself from going over the edge because of his weakened elder state.
While the fall didn’t kill the Juggernaut as his magic prevented him from actually dying, Matt revealed that it would take him years to get back up the mountain because of his old age, and the Juggernaut was effectively defeated by time itself. This look at the future of the Juggernaut revealed that the power that was once a blessing as it offered him nearly endless amounts of power was actually a curse that keeps him alive despite the continued aging of his body.
In his younger years, the Juggernaut was completely unkillable, even being reduced to a skeleton during a fight in the solo issue Juggernaut #1, a comic that showed the Juggernaut can keep fighting even if he barely has a body with which to fight. Based on the initial understanding of the Juggernaut’s powers, one would assume that the magic that makes him invincible would also preserve his body from the negative impact of old age, but fans now know that isn’t the case as time is revealed to be the Juggernaut’s only weakness.
