Every League Of Legends Champion In Netflix’s Arcane

Here is a list of every champion from the League of Legends video game that appears in the Netflix series Arcane. Although League of Legends has made numerous impressive animated sequences before, from music videos to character cinematic, Arcane is the first full-fledged story the game has produced. Arcane’s success is all the more surprising considering that historically video game adaptations tend to fail, but the series manages to find a voice of its own without gimmicks or heavy-handed references. Arcane has been a global hit, boasting an impressive 9.4 rating on IMDb, and has already been renewed for season two.

League of Legends has become a global phenomenon since its release in 2009, bringing in millions of viewers worldwide each year for its championship events. The lore in League of Legends is expansive, with a character description and backstory for each of its champions that all intertwine in various ways. Although there are many different lands in Runeterra (the planet on which the game takes place; translates to “magic earth”), Arcane focuses mainly on the industrious city of Piltover and its criminal underbelly known as Zaun. The show does an excellent job of world-building, with specific color schemes and detailed landscapes distinguishing the two very different cities.

Arcane is arguably the best video game adaptation of all time, with a distinctive art style and a compelling narrative. The show borrows characters and elements from League of Legends’ lore and applies them in an original story. Of the 157 playable champions in League of Legends, Arcane uses only 9 in its first season, although it implies that there will be more to come. But until then, here is every champion that has appeared in the series thus far.

Arcane gives context to the torment of Jinx’s mind, detailing her transformation from the naive and innocent Powder to the reckless criminal mastermind that is Jinx. She is one of the show’s most dynamic and interesting characters, and she has long been one of League of Legends’ most popular champions. Jinx was heavily utilized in promoting the series and was even added as a playable character in Fortnite ahead of the show’s release.

Vi is played by streaming star Hailee Steinfeld and is the protagonist of the series. Many fans of the game have long speculated that Jinx and Vi were sisters, although it is unclear whether that is the case outside of the show. In League of Legends lore, Vi remembers little to nothing from her childhood, including her own name, and is only called “Vi” due to the Roman numerals tattooed on her cheek.

Jayce Talis is perhaps the most prolific intellectual in the history of Piltover. Arcane takes some liberties with his story, making him out to be somewhat more naive rather than the arrogant and conceited character he is in League of Legends lore. Jayce is the symbol of Piltover, dubbed the “Man of Progress” and the “Defender of Tomorrow”, and strives to make life easier for the working class with his inventions.

Of all of the video game characters in Netflix’s ArcaneCaitlyn’s character is one of the closest to the source material. Caitlyn Kiramman is an outlier in the high society of Piltover. Her mother is a high-ranking political figure, but she would often preach about the dangers that come with power and status, shaping Caitlyn’s sense of right and wrong from an early age. Caitlyn and Vi are effectively the antitheses of one another while both possessing a prevalent moral compass, making them ideal crime-fighting partners.

Ekko is the newest League of Legends champion to be included in Arcane, released in October of 2015. In the game’s lore, Ekko is one of the only characters with memories of Vi as a child. He is a prodigious inventor from the streets of Zaun, apparently able to create simple machines before he could crawl. His technology grants him control over time, which the series alludes to several times.

Not only is Viktor’s animation in Arcane different from the game (at least so far), but his backstory has also been significantly altered. The show portrays him as a sympathetic character, reluctantly being driven to violate his morals for the sake of his own survival. In League of Legends’ lore, Viktor is a hyper-logical savant who views human nature as an impediment to progress, inventing technologies that are abhorred by Jayce and the Council alike.

Not much is seen of Singed in Arcane beyond establishing his questionable intentions. Dubbed “The Mad Chemist”, Singed is a brilliant scientist known for pushing the boundaries of knowledge with his unethical experiments. Singed spent most of his life in Piltover before being cast out due to his unpopular methods, eventually starting a new life and continuing his studies in Zaun.

Heimerdinger is a Yordle, one of the only non-human characters in the show, but Arcane never explains any Yordle lore in its nine episodes. Yordles are a race of ethereal beings from Bandle City, a realm between realms populated by spirits. Heimerdinger is 307-years-old, and although he may appear elderly, Yordles have been known to live for centuries, with some living upwards of 10,000 years. Although Yordles rarely leave their home in the spirit realm, there have been accounts of a handful scattered throughout Runeterra across history. Heimerdinger is one of Piltover’s founders, as well as being one of the finest inventors the city has ever seen.

Ryze is one of League of Legends’ original 17 champions, making him the oldest character to appear in Arcane. He is only seen briefly at the beginning of the series when he saves Jayce and his mother, but little information is given as to his identity. Although he is only a small part of the first season, the mysterious intrigue of his character and the profound impact that he had on Jayce’s life make it seem rather likely that Ryze will appear again in Arcane season two. An ancient wanderer, Ryze is considered to be one of the most powerful sorcerers in all of Runeterra. He travels the realm in search of powerful artifacts so that he might prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.
