Does Tom Petty Play Himself In The Postman? | Screen Rant

Tom Petty had a memorable extended cameo in Kevin Costner's The Postman, but is he playing himself in the movie? Kevin Costner had an epic run as an actor and director during the late '80s and early '90s. His leading man turns in the likes of The Untouchables or No Way Out made him a star, and he often mixed blockbusters like Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves with more cerebral thrillers such as Oliver Stone's JFK.

Kevin Costner made his directorial debut with western Dances With Wolves in 1990, which was expected to be a major flop but instead became a critical and commercial smash, and later - controversially - won the Best Picture Oscar over Goodfellas. Sadly, Costner's run as a major star took a hit with 1995's Waterworld - which has a TV series in development - which suffered a famously messy production and received mixed reviews. While the movie was still a hit worldwide and is now considered a fun, ambitious blockbuster, Costner's box-office appeal slowly waned. This came to a head with the failure of his 1997 post-apocalyptic western The Postman.

Kevin Costner directed and played the titular role, who is a wandering nomad who dons the clothes of a deceased postman and inadvertently spreads hope across the country. The film's reception has improved over time, but unlike Waterworld, it was a true bomb and only grossed back about a quarter of its production budget. The Postman's Tom Petty cameo is considered one of the movie's highlights, with the late, great singer credited as "Bridge City Mayor." - but is he actually playing himself?

While The Postman never confirms singer Tom Petty is playing himself in the movie's version of the future - which was set in 2013 - it heavily implies it. Costner's character says "I know you. You're famous," upon meeting Tom Petty's The Postman character, to which the latter responds "I used to be." While it may seem a little distracting to have somebody of Petty's caliber in such a small role, the movie does link back to the joke, as the "Bridge City Mayor" later realizes Costner's postman is also kind of famous.

Tom Petty's The Postman cameo wasn't his only acting role, and he played parts in 1987 comedy Made in Heaven and, more notably, voiced side character Lucky on King Of The Hill. Oddly, Tom Petty playing himself in The Postman isn't the first time a famous musician has done so in a post-apocalyptic adventure. In 1987's The Running Man starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mick Fleetwood played himself in the bleak future of 2017, where he led an underground resistance.
