Why Boba Fett Is No Longer A Bounty Hunter In His Star Wars Show
A new The Book of Boba Fett trailer sees the legendary Star Wars character claim he's done being a bounty hunter. Taking place in the aftermath of The Mandalorian season 2, Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) has returned to the desert world of Tatooine along with Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) and is taking up residence in the palace of the late Jabba the Hutt, Fett's former employer. However, it looks as though Fett is looking to do more than just sit on Jabba's throne, desiring to begin a whole new enterprise beyond bounty hunting entirely.
The Book of Boba Fett trailer begins with Fett himself claiming that he's no longer a bounty hunter despite having spent his entire life in the profession, honoring the legacy of his father Jango. As a bounty hunter, Boba Fett took down countless marks gaining an impressive reputation as one of the best (and deadliest) in the entire galaxy. Nevertheless, it seems as though Fett's priorities have shifted, turning his gaze to greater opportunities in this new era without the Empire and the void left by the death of his old boss Jabba the Hutt.
As the trailer confirms, Boba Fett will be looking to rule from Jabba's Palace on Tatooine as a crime lord. While he's looking to take over and manage the operations that made up the Hutt's vast empire in the galaxy's underworld, Boba doesn't want to rule in the same way: "Jabba ruled with fear. I intend to rule with respect." While this falls in line with Fett's code of honor, that doesn't mean Tatooine's newest crime boss will be soft to those who cross him as the trailer features him brutally taking down foes with the same intensity as was seen in The Mandalorian season 2. While he may not be a bounty hunter anymore, it's only because Fett is looking to take things to next level by taking Jabba the Hutt's seat of power.
Boba Fett is also seen conferring with Jabba's former captains, offering a proposal he believes will be "mutually beneficial." While a few of these captains naturally don't trust him, Boba is offering a chance for cooperation and the apparent opportunity to gain riches over constant conflict, suggesting that Jabba's captains fell to in-fighting after the Hutt was killed by Leia Organa in Return of the Jedi. As seen in The Mandalorian, bounty hunting isn't easy work and doesn't come with guaranteed rewards; running an entire criminal empire stands to be far more lucrative for Boba Fett, and means less time traversing the galaxy and getting his hands dirty. It also seems as though Boba Fett's new goals beyond bounty hunting will take some time before they come to fruition, and that more than a few cases will force Fett to get his hands dirty in order to demand the respect and cooperation he desires.
While Boba Fett may not be looking to become the bounty hunter he once was for this new series, it doesn't appear as though that will make him any less dynamic or interesting. If this first trailer is any indication, Boba's return to Tatooine is going to be full of danger and action as he attempts to fill the power vacuum in the galaxy's underworld, a prospect that will no doubt be far more rewarding than bounty hunting could ever be should Fett succeed when The Book of Boba Fett is released on Disney+ on December 29, 2021.
