Why Baldur's Gate 3 Draconic Bloodlines Could Change The Game
Patch 6, the latest gameplay patch to Larian Studios' fantasy RPG Baldur's Gate 3, was released in October and brought with it a new region, class, and a wide variety of other gameplay mechanics and features to explore. Among these are Draconic Bloodlines, which provides players with powerful dragon magic and some new customization options. Here are all the ways that Draconic Bloodlines change the game as well as how players can use them to deepen their immersive roleplaying experience throughout Baldur's Gate 3.
Baldur's Gate 3 was released in early access in October of 2020 and is currently scheduled for a tentative full release at some point during 2022. The game has been intermittently updated through the form of patches, most of which have served to gradually broaden the game's map as well as introduce new playable classes, most of which are in line with those seen in Dungeons & Dragons 5e. For example, a previous patch released earlier in 2021 allowed players to pick a Druid as their starting class, giving them the ability to shift into different beast forms, each of which came with a new ability to use in combat and while exploring.
The Sorcerer is now the most recent class to be added to the game, and it comes with two distinct subclasses in the form of Wild Magic and Draconic Bloodline. Wild Magic works similarly to how the mechanic is implemented in Dungeons & Dragons, marking Baldur's Gate 3's ongoing success with emulating tabletop gameplay in a digital medium. Sorcerer players who utilize Wild Magic have a chance to gain an advantage on rolls, with the drawback of unleashing a random effect, ranging anywhere from gaining an additional bonus action by teleporting, summoning a fierce enemy, or simply setting the entire field on fire. The Draconic Bloodlines subclass differs quite a bit from this, though it still adds interesting spells to work with.
Dragonic Bloodlines allow players to channel the power of their dragon ancestors in creative ways during battle, according to the official patch notes as released on Baldur's Gate 3's official Steam page. This means they can now utilize fire, lightning, acid, poison, or cold damage when fighting against enemies. This echoes the Dragon Ancestor trait featured in D&D 5e, which lets players pick one type of dragon as their player's ancestor and gives them access to a corresponding type of damage. In Baldur's Gate 3, Sorcerers with the Draconic Bloodlines subclass will also gain one spell that matches their ancestor. For example, the Red Dragon gives players the spell Burning Hands, enabling them to shoot flames from their fingertips. This extra spell could give them a significant advantage in battle, especially if players are looking to build up strength in the area of one particular element.
In addition to these combat changes, Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers in Baldur's Gate 3 also gain access to unique customization options during character creation. Draconic scales can now be added to characters who have this ability, making for a nice character-building detail, particularly for those Baldur's Gate 3 fans looking to deepen their roleplaying experience while playing. A host of new spells were also added for Sorcerer characters to utilize, such as Enlarge and Reduce, which changes the size and attributes of a character, and Crown of Madness, which drives an enemy mad and may cause them to attack their allies.
These spells, along with the trademark Sorcerer feature of Metamagic (which enables spells to become adaptive in the heat of combat), make the class an interesting and powerful choice. It's worth due consideration during character creation. Players who are enjoying making multiple characters across Baldur's Gate 3 save files might want to give a Draconic Bloodlines Sorcerer a try.
