Godzilla Villain Getting Incredibly Detailed Toy For 50th Anniversary

Godzilla villain Hedorah is getting an incredibly detailed toy for the 50th anniversary of its first appearance in Godzilla vs. Hedorah. 1954's Godzilla (or Gojira, as it was called in Japan) was the first film to introduce audiences to the horrifyingly destructive capabilities of the titular dinosaur-like monster. Godzilla has been the subject of 32 Japanese Toho films, but quickly became popular with American audiences as well with the 1956 release of Godzilla, King of the Monsters!, an Americanized retelling of the original 1954 film.

Godzilla has encountered a number of enemies over the course of his long cinematic history, including Mothra, Ghidorah, and Gigan, and he recently even tussled with King Kong himself. In 1971, audiences were introduced to a brand new villainous kaiju in the form of Hedorah. The hulking greyish-green monster, also known as the Smog Monster, fed directly off of humanity's pollution of the Earth, making him a formidable opponent for the King of the Monsters. Godzilla did eventually defeat Hedorah, but only after losing one of his eyes and having his right hand burnt to the bone by the creature's toxic acid attacks.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the epic showdown in Godzilla vs. Hedorah, S.H. MonsterArts (via BigBadToyStore) is releasing a highly detailed set of Hedorah figurines. The set, which is available for pre-order at $199, features three forms of the Smog Monster: an adult form, a flying form, and a swimming form. Both the flying and swimming forms also come with their own display stands. The set is currently expected to arrive in July of next year. Check out the Hedorah figurines below:

Hedorah has a very unique appearance, with a rippled and frayed outer shell that appears as if it's melting from toxic waste. Hedorah's adult form figurine, the largest of the three, captures this look well, and features a finely modeled exterior with vibrant coloring to the neck, eyes, head, and back. Hedorah's flying form, the second-largest, features a much smoother, more aerodynamic grey exterior reminiscent of a stingray, but retains the creature's iconic bright red eyes. The swimming form, the smallest of the figurines, which has a somewhat tadpole-like appearance, once again captures the creature's uniquely textured skin layer.

For fans of Godzilla, the new Hedorah toy seems like a must-have addition to any collection. Godzilla is one of the longest-reigning movie monsters of all time, so the villains he faces off against need to be unique and just as memorable. Although Hedorah's visual aesthetic is difficult to capture in toy form due to the creature's almost melted appearance, the new set of figurines manage to recreate it perfectly and will look right at home on a shelf next to a figurine of the King of the Monsters himself.
