The X-Men's Failure Could Destroy Krakoa in Marvel's Inferno

This article contains spoilers for X-Men: Inferno #1.

The X-Men's greatest failure could spell the end for the mutant nation of Krakoa. Charles Xavier has always had a reputation for being the consummate chess player, always planning several moves ahead. The last few years have revealed just how much that's the case, because he's secretly been working with the reincarnating mutant Moira MacTaggert all along. At last, Xavier's true agenda - one he pursued in an alliance with Magneto - has been fulfilled. The entire mutant race has established itself on the living island of Krakoa, with mutants even learning to conquer death by synergizing their powers with Cerebro technology.

There's just one catch, though. Xavier has been forced to promise not to allow one particular mutant to be resurrected – Destiny, the wife of Mystique. Moira encountered Destiny in one of her previous lives, and the mutant precog can track all her actions across the timeline. Moira has plans of her own - ones she has not divulged to Charles Xavier - and Destiny would be a threat to her mysterious agenda. And so Xavier and Magneto have been stringing Mystique along, promising to bring Destiny back from the dead in return for certain favors. This is a promise they have no intention of fulfilling, and in Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti's X-Men: Inferno they agreed to destroy all records of Destiny in order to make resurrection impossible.

But they waited too long and it all goes horribly wrong. It seems Mystique has found a way to bring Destiny back without needing the help of Xavier and Magneto. In truth, the X-Men's leaders have been losing control of the resurrection protocols for quite some time now as the five mutants who perform the resurrections recently began deciding their own rules. Clearly, Mystique went to them with her request; and given Mystique is a member of the ruling quiet council, they were probably happy to oblige.

And so the X-Men comics are about to change completely. Moira MacTaggert has her own agenda, and Destiny doesn't fit into it at all. Destiny had long ago instructed Mystique to burn Krakoa to the ground if she could not find a way to resurrect her. Many readers had generally assumed this was an act of petty vengeance, but it may actually mean Destiny believes Moira's true purpose to be too dangerous. Life on Krakoa is about to become a great game of chess between two grandmasters, each implacably opposed to the other, with the future of the entire mutant race at stake.

All this could have been averted. Charles Xavier and Magneto believed they could string Mystique along, forgetting that she is every bit as tricky and manipulative as they are. Clearly, Mystique began to doubt their true motives, and so decided to take action herself. Now the X-Men's mutant island may be caught in the chaos that is sure to follow.
