Sarah Paulson Says Impeachment Linda Tripp Role Felt Impossible

Sarah Paulson says playing Linda Tripp in American Crime Story: Impeachment felt impossible. Produced by Ryan Murphy, the anthology crime series debuted in 2016 and tackled the events surrounding the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Last year, FX announced the third installment of American Crime Story would zero in on the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, as told from Lewinsky’s point of view.

Starring Clive Owen as Bill Clinton, Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky, Edie Falco as Hillary Clinton, Cobie Smulders as Ann Coulter, and Paulson as the controversial Linda Tripp, Impeachment released its first episode on September 7. Unpacking the White House scandal in weekly installments, Impeachment shows the actors transformed into iconic public figures. Focusing on Clinton's sexual relationship, the series continues to receive mixed reviews from critics. Leaning heavily on the relationship between Monica and Linda, the first episodes of Impeachment have placed a scope on Paulson's turn as Tripp.

Speaking with Elle, Paulson reveals that portraying whistleblower Linda Tripp in Impeachment felt like an impossible task. Declaring that she developed a “tremendous amount of empathy” for Tripp after spending over a year in her mindset, Paulson said she felt drawn to the role due to its risk factor. Admitting that she thought Murphy was crazy for wanting to cast her, Paulson said the role felt impossible and dangerous. Read more of what Paulson said below:

I do try to do the thing that seems impossible to me—though there are plenty of other people who [thought this] was impossible. I do tend to be drawn to the riskiest thing, where the most is at stake. This is a real woman who did a hideous thing, who I ultimately think was not a hideous person. [Taking the role] wasn't about [giving her] redemption, but about the opportunity I was given to explore the psychology of a woman who did something I think is very hard for all of us to understand. As an actor, it's a very rich huge opportunity for exploration, that is making me expand as a performer and learn things about myself. It's the most wonderful consequence of doing something dangerous.

As it stands, Paulson portraying Linda Tripp seems to have altered the actress permanently. Speaking on Tripp’s action, Paulson stated that Linda "didn’t know the extent of the fallout” and maintains that Tripp would have selected a different course of action “if she would have known what would have happened to Monica.” Lewinsky, who serves as an executive producer and consultant on Impeachment, said Paulson’s take on Tripp was so uncanny, Lewinsky found herself severely triggered by the performance.

Indeed, Paulson's take on Linda has put the notorious figure into a new light and has opened new conversations about Linda Tripp being mislabeled as a villain. Of course, Paulson’s portrayal of Marcia Clark in O.J. Simpson helped to redeem the former prosecutor who was scrutinized by the media and public. Given Paulson’s ability to tackle the impossible and inhabit her roles, she was the ideal choice to play the prominent figure Linda Tripp in American Crime Story: Impeachment.
