Metroid Fans Are Debating Who Should Play Samus Aran In A Movie

Since the recent Nintendo Direct, fans have started an ongoing discussion over who should play Samus Aran in a hypothetical Metroid movie adaptation. Metroid is a long-running Nintendo franchise that saw its first release on the NES in 1986. The series sees Samus Aran, a lone bounty hunter in a powered suit of armor, traverse isolated alien planets, discovering powerups and mysteries along the way and fighting impressive alien creatures.

Excitement is building as Metroid: Dread, the new entry in the series, approaches release on Nintendo Switch on October 8. Fans have had to wait 11 years for a new mainline game since Metroid: Other M was released in 2010 to mixed reactions. And following the recent Nintendo Direct, where Nintendo shocked fans with the news of an animated Mario movie with Chris Pratt set to voice Mario himself, fans have taken to theorizing who would fit as Samus Aran in a potential Metroid movie.

On Reddit, user Ca11m3Raven started the discussion by posting a mockup of Brie Larson with "Samus Aran" in the title card, in a style which visually matches the recent Mario announcement in the September Nintendo Direct. Since this initial Reddit post, many other users have offered different stars they envision to be a good match for the role. Some notable names include Gwendoline Christie, from Game of Thrones fame, Milla Jovovich, who has starred in the Resident Evil movies, and Chloe Grace Moretz, from 2018's Suspiria. However, one Reddit user, by the name of HAMMY875, has announced that no actress can match the likeness of Samus Aran from the games themselves.

Metroid as a series has been known to take influence from movies, most notably, the popular Alien movie franchise. Metroid stars a heroine who is tasked with exploring isolated planets in space, with one of the main villains in the series even donning the name "Ridley" as a sort of nod to Alien director Ridley Scott. Ridley is a sinister draconic foe whose appearance in Metroid has evolved considerably from his initial character art. The Metroid series is beloved by fans and has latent potential for a movie adaptation, and excitement is increasing for the upcoming Switch release. Since Mario is going to have such a star-studded cast, it would make sense that a hypothetical Metroid adaptation would too.

At present, Nintendo has not officially announced any other movie adaptations of its video game franchises. But following the casting announcement for the Mario film, and with the upcoming release of Metroid: Dread on the Nintendo Switch, it's an exciting time to theorize about what could be on the horizon for Metroid, as well as Nintendo's other popular video game properties.
